This puts many people at risk for developing life-threatening diseases such as hypertension, high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome. Many of these people want to lose weight, but are either unsuccessful on whatever diet they choose, or just dont know where to start. The fact is, which diet you go on is not important; its just that you control what you eat and exercise. Even factoring genetic differences into the equation, Americans weight gain can be decreased simply with portion control and increased physical activity. The bottom line is if you eat more calories that you burn, you will become overweight. Dietary habits have changed in the last 25 years, mostly due to eating more. Portion sizes have gotten larger, both in restaurants and at home. In fact, the most commonly available food portions exceed the USDA standards. Most foods now are available in larger portion sizes than they were in the 1970s. In 1977, salty snacks, hamburgers, and soda comprised 18.1% of all calories consumed; this number increased to 27.7% in 1996, and continues to rise. Specifically, salty snacks increased 93 calories, soft drinks 49 calories, hamburgers 97 calories, French fries 68 calories, and Mexican food 133 calories, when comparing portion sizes between the two years. These statistics are especially important when you consider that ten additional, unexpended calories consumed per day result in an extra pound of weight put on per year. One thing must be made clearthere is a difference between portion sizes and serving sizes. Portions are what we actually eat; servings are what the FDA food labels are based on. The key to portion control is to make your portions equal to servings. To do this, you must take the time to eyeball the serving sizes when you eat. Some general analogies are: –A deck of playing cards or a computer mouse = one serving (3 oz.) of meat, poultry, or fish. –Half a baseball = one serving (1/2 cup) of fruit, vegetables, pasta, or rice. –Your thumb = one serving (one ounce) of cheese –A small hand holding a tennis ball = one serving (1 c.) of yogurt or chopped fresh greens It is easier to control portion sizes at home with a few simple steps. First, measure individual servings onto plates or bowls for a while, so you know what a serving should look like. Second, avoid serving food family style. Dish up plates with appropriate portions in the kitchen, and dont go back for seconds. Serve on smaller platesit will trick your mind into thinking you are eating more. Never eat directly out of the bag or carton, as you will have no idea how much you are eating. Put the serving size onto a plate or in a bowl, and put the rest away. During the holiday months, as we are eating more and more often, reduce your portions by an additional 50% at holiday meals to avoid weight gain. At cocktail parties, eat just what you put on your plate, instead of grazing at buffets. In restaurants, you must also control portions. Avoid fast food restaurants altogether. They have been shown to serve the biggest portions. Also avoid all-you-can-eat buffets; people think they need to eat more to get their moneys worth. When eating out, ask for half or smaller portions. If you do get a large portion, immediately measure out the correct serving size, ask for a doggie bag, and put the rest aside. There is no need to go on a fancy, difficult, or fad diet to lose weight, as long as you pay attention to what goes in your body, and stay active to burn those calories up. Think positive thoughts and good health and good fortune. Think nothing and achieve bliss. Reiki is really about helping those who are stuck in self, access the healing energies of a higher power. In some ways too, Reiki can be called an active, ritualistic form of prayer. A Reiki healing is a very simple, and quite religious act of faith. In essence, the Reiki Healer or Master can be seen as a channel or vessel for the transformative power of Gods love. The practitioner places his or her hands upon the person to be healed with the intent for healing to occur, and then the energy begins flowing. Into the afflicted part of the body, without any judgement or thoughts from the Reiki Master. The healer draws exactly the amount of needed energy to the recipient. There is no conscious intervention or appeal on the part of the healer who are there to keep the healing space open between the diseased or troubled person and the divine love before. The healer/s job is to get out of the way and be a conduit. Often, if you will observe a Reiki healer, he or she will appear to stop and watch or listen for signs of what to do next, from a silent voice. Traditionally, the healer is taught a set of hand positions that are postured over the sick or troubled persons body. These sometimes look like the Reiki master is giving the person a massage from mid hair. The Reiki Practitioner will occasionally make scooping or actions like he is smoothing a bedspread. This is all part of his intent to intuitively correct energy imbalances in your aura. Some healers will also place their hands directly on a sick or ill part of a body and keep them there as long as necessary. Reiki can also be used to still emotional storms as well as heal relationships. This is done by correcting the subtle energies of what is known as the orgone body, electromagnetic field or the aura. Often, hands are passed through the air, once again, removing blocks and negative entities or thought forms from the persons force field. Reiki is also used to heal individuals at a distance. This is also called remote healing. Although it is not always necessary, the Reiki healer will ask for an object or create an object that represents the ill person. Treating the object is thought to also treat the person at a long distance away. Some very talented Reiki masters have also been known to heal objects such as cars, computers and traffic jams. The idea is to act as a vessel and send the situation light so that it will correct itself. In a way, Reiki is also about breaking bad patterns. The great sages always despise anything too habitual as it is thought to cause stagnation and disease. Chances are that you have inhaled an aroma purported to calm, soothe, energize or balance. True to our capitalistic roots, this ancient healing art has become big business. Aromatherapy is now used to market everything from room deodorizers to laundry detergent. Whats behind this sensational trend and why the booming popularity? Aromatherapy is commonly used in alternative medicine. While many forms of natural medicine can be traced to our neighbors in the East, aromatherapy is a product of the French. The modern term aromatherapy is often traced to French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse. It is said that Gattefosse burned his hand in the lab and thrust it into the nearest liquid which happened to be lavender oil. His hand healed without scars and he began to investigate the healing and psychotherapeutic benefits of essential oils. During World War II, another Frenchman, Dr. Jean Valmet, used essential oils as an antiseptic, and aromatherapy later achieved status as a holistic therapy due to the efforts of Madame Marguerite Maury. We can also thank Madame Maury for the use of essential oils in massage therapy. There is no denying that scent plays a significant role in our lives. Our sense of smell can help us to detect danger, signal us to eat, and affect our mood. In 2004, the Nobel Prize was awarded to U.S. researchers Linda Buck and Richard Axel for their discovery of 1,000 genes and receptors for the sense of smell. In awarding the coveted prize, the jury noted, “A unique odor can trigger distinct memories from our childhood or from emotional momentspositive or negativelater in life.” Aromatherapy practitioners use essential oils to treat digestive disorders, aches and pains, and psychological disorders. In many countries, essential oils are regulated and can be prescribed by physicians. Japan, Germany, Russia and the United States do not recognize aromatherapy as a valid branch of medicine. Detractors, while not minimizing the role of smell in the human life, refute the healing powers of oil. Yet, both the scientific and the nonscientific communities agree that aroma does have an impact. For most of us, it does not take scientific evidence to validate the connection between aroma and our brains. The fragrant aroma of certain foods makes us salivate in seconds, the smell of baked goodies can evoke feelings of comfort, and peppermint has the amazing power to refresh and reenergize. In the West, scent therapy has less to do with healing disease and more with healing mood, thus the popularity of adding scent to household items. Lavender oil has a calming effect and is linked to male sexual response. The sweet, spicy smell of basil improves concentration and lifts depression. Tea tree oils noted for their antimicrobial properties are frequently found in hair and skin care products. Even skeptics accept that mint and eucalyptus relieve stuffy noses caused by colds and flu. The perfume industry has always marketed the mood-invoking power of scent. Scents are marketed as sensual, sexy, calming, refreshing, natural, and romantic. Shopping malls use scent to create a mood. During the holiday season, the lighting and aromas are all designed to put you in a holly, jolly shopping mood. And, of course, there is no denying the difference that scented oils make during a massage. If you are interested in true aromatherapy, it is best to visit a trained professional, such as a holistic physician. Oils can be very potent and when used inappropriately they can irritate the skin or cause more serious reactions such as liver damage or seizures. If you simply enjoy certain fragrances and the way they make you feel by all means indulge your passion. Even detractors cannot refute that if a particular scent or smell makes you feel better, by all means burn it, spray it, or lather up in it.
