Top of the Mind Awareness in Equine Marketing: Familiarity Breeds Sales

Thursday, January 31st, 2008

By I. M. Andrews One of the large challenges you face as an equine marketer is achieving what marketing professionals call “top of the mind awareness” of your horses and business. What is Top of the Mind Awareness? Top of the Mind Awareness, or “TOMA,” is being the first supplier a prospective customer thinks of when they think about the horses, equine products, or horse-related services that you offer. Increasing your level of TOMA in your prospects’ minds impacts your current sales of horses and services as well as your future sales. Here are some examples of TOMA at work: Example 1: You have TOMA of products with which you are familiar. If someone asks you about farriers, the image or name that pops into your mind is probably that of your own farrier. You are most familiar with your own farrier, so he is on “top of your mind.” Your awareness may be so strong that when you hear the general word “farrier,” you picture your own farrier’s face! Most people maintain their own status quowhen they find their service providers to be satisfactory, they are in a comfortable position than selecting another and venturing into the unknown. You are a current customer of your farrier and, as long as you are otherwise satisfied, that familiarity helps to keep you a current customer. Example 2: You have TOMA for products that you have never used! Think about a type of product that you haven’t tried. For example, the first time you think you might try feeding a joint health supplement, do any names come to mind? Cosequin, Corta-Flx, or another brand? Even though you don’t have first-hand familiarity with the product, you probably can think of one or more specific brands. The reason those brands come to the top of your mind is that effective marketing has put them there! You have seen an ad for the brand, or the product package, or heard its name in conjunction with the product’s purpose. Odds are, you have been exposed to information about the product in several ways and many times. Your mind has associated that brand with the idea of “joint supplement,” and stored it away in your memory. How to Build Your Horse Business by Building TOMA: Familiarity builds positive associations. In one psychological study, each subject was shown a random squiggly line. When the person was later presented with a set of squiggly line patterns and asked which they liked the best, most chose the line that they had seen before. It works for squiggly lines, for products, and for business and brand names: The more familiarity, the more likely that something is preferred. Think of ways to create TOMA with your prospective customers, put those strategies into practice, and become your prospects’ instinctive first choice! Copyright 2005 by I.M. Intimacy: The Elusive Ingredient in Relationships

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008

By Nick Arrizza, M.D. I’m sure that you know of, or at least have heard of, the importance of intimacy as a critical factor in the success of a relationship. In this article I wish to discuss: 1. My definition of intimacy. 2. Reasons why intimacy is an elusive ingredient in most relationships, and, 3. What one can do to create more intimacy in one’s relationship. Firstly, let me begin with what I mean by intimacy. Very simply it is about one’s ability to remain open and honest with their partner about what they are feeling and thinking. Clearly such a feat is not an easy one for most couples to achieve for reasons which include: 1. Many individuals are often not even aware themselves of what they are thinking and/or feeling. 2. This lack of awareness is often the result of a host of fears of being fully conscious of this information. 3. The fears are often about dredging up uncomfortable feelings about one’s self, one’s past, one’s family, and ones feelings about their partner and so on. 4. There is a general assumption that it is better for all concerned to keep such information suppressed. 5. There is an assumption that by distracting one’s self from this information that it will just disappear. This type of self sabotage often leads to a relationship in which the members of the couple never really get to know each other. When this happens it becomes difficult to be fully one’s self with the other and hence the relationship starts feeling constraining and/or energetically draining after a while. This is because it takes a great deal of energy to keep this uncomfortable information suppressed at an unconscious level. Additionally the relationship will start to feel both unsafe and empty emotionally. Unsafe because each member will not know who they are having a relationship with. Empty because it will be difficult to relax, be one’s self and have a meaningful and fulfilling interchange. In time cracks will emerge in the relationship and cause it to disintegrate. What can be done to head this off at the pass? The solution is to help each individual become more open and comfortable with their own inner emotional life i.e. eradicate the fear of their own inner feelings. It sounds ironic, doesn’t it that the solution to the intimacy issue is really about being honest with one’s self first? College Students Having Academic Difficulties

Sunday, January 27th, 2008

By Robert Crawford III Students can sometime become overwhelmed with class work and assignments which could cause great deviancies in their grades. Students should know the avenues and routes that they can take to assist in addressing problems in academics before they become horrendous. 1. If you realize at some point that you may fail or are failing a class it is best to address this issue with the instructor or professor to determine what can be done at that point. 2. If a student is barely passing a class he or she may want to be withdrawn (WN) or (W) from the class by the professor and receive and (I) grade which indicates they are currently in good standing but are subject to receiving a failing grade. 3. If students choose to follow the information above (2) they can later complete the coursework and still get a good grade if they are at least passing the course at the time of the withdrawal, but subject to failing if they continue. 4. Students should realize that an F grade will cause substantial damage even to a GPA of 3.00 or better, so it is better to withdraw or drop the class than to receive a bad grade. 5. See an academic advisor to assist them in class selection to help insure student is not taking a heavy load of classes that may be detrimental to them during the semester. 6. Develop continuous contact with your instructor from beginning to end of the semester which provides a good relation with you and your instructor. The Thrills and Chills of Getting a Driver’s License

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Morgan Hamilton My son is getting his drivers license, so family expenses are about to increase. He completed his classroom training and passed his permit test. When I went to pick him after the test my son wanted to drive home but I didn’t let him. Our state allows driving with a permit if there is an adult having a driving license in the vehicle. However, there was much traffic and as my son had never operated the car before, I didnt let him drive. He was very disappointed but respectfully didnt argue with me. When we were three miles from home and there was no heavy traffic I pulled over and told my son to get behind the wheel. He was really happy, he gave me a hug and we exchanged seats. As my son is taller than me, we first adjusted the seat, then we checked the positioning of the rearview and the side mirrors. Then I advised him to signal and check for traffic. He did that and immediately stepped on the accelerator but we stayed in place. What he had forgotten was to put the transmission into drive. After he did that we started moving but suddenly heard a horn honking. We had forgotten to check if there was any car coming. My son got confused and nervous after this and suggested he should wait to drive until he has completed his wheel training. As I didn’t want him to be afraid of driving, thus I reassured him he could do it and so we gave it another try. After signaling and checking for traffic, we pulled out. We soon approached the turn for our street and I expected him to take it while he passed it off. I told my son we should get home with the groceries I had bought and he answered he was driving straight home. I told him that we had missed the turn. He was so busy steering, watching traffic and driving that he didn’t notice where we were. Eventually he did turn into our driveway and we got home. After that he explained to me that he had not expected it would be so difficult as there is so much to think about when driving and he hoped he would take his drivers license. Having said that, I thought about how little I paid attention when I was behind the wheel. I have had my drivers license for more than 20 years, so fundamentals like steering, signaling and observing the traffic have become second nature to me. I believe that my driving habits might be improved if I keep on helping my son get his drivers license. When I informed my insurance agent that my son was to get a drivers license, he told me that our insurance would be significantly increased with a young male driver in home. Ponds & Waterfalls: Water Living

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

By Douglas Hoover We cant live without it. Water is the very source of life That is why we are so strongly attracted to it. Maybe because we cannot live more than a few days without water, we want to have it close by. Most people would like to live next to it, whether in the form of a stream, river, lake or ocean. Unfortunately, there arent enough bodies of water to go around for everybody, even for those who can afford living near them. The price of beach front property reflects the fact that it is scarce and in high demand. Even for those fortunate enough to own such property, there is a major trade-off and a good share of disadvantages. Who wouldnt like to have a water garden on their property, or a flower and vegetable garden, or even a wonderful orchard with oranges, apples, plums, peaches, lemons and avocado? Maybe a corral with a horse or two. So much for thinking about a garden with most ocean front property. Youre lucky if you have enough land to be able to walk between the houses! We can now see why water gardens with waterfalls and ponds are becoming so popular. If you cant take your home to the water, just bring the water to your home! Why is it so peaceful, yet still invigorating at the beach? Is it the sight or sound of the ocean waves, the smell of the salt water? You may be surprised to discover that the actual feelings of peace, relaxation, stress, and anxiety release has little to do with the sight or sounds or smell of the ocean. Extensive research has shown that moving water puts additional negative ions into the air. Breathing this supercharged air has an extremely positive effect on our body. The ocean creates the greatest quantity of negative ions of all moving water. Therefore, it has the most beneficial effects on our moods while drawing the largest crowds. For the same reason, waterfalls create such pleasant and relaxing environments. You have probably noticed how wonderful the air smells and feels just prior to, during and after a rain storm again negative ions. For a fraction fo the cost of ocean or lake front living, almost every homeowner can reap the benefits of a waterfall and pond in their back yard. Ranging from an atmosphere of intimacy to one of grandeur, its whatever the budget can endure. Virtually everyone can own a portion of the best that nature has to offer. There are as many different varieties, shapes and sizes of waterfalls as there are rocks. Consequently, with a pond design of your choice, no two ever look the same and they provide a natural individuality for each homeowner. Waterfalls can cascade into koi ponds, a stream, swimming pool, spa or simply spill through a rock-covered grate into a subterranean catch basin, from where it gets pumped and recirculated. This type of backyard pond design is great for someone with small children, since it eliminates the need for a hazardous pond. Its also perfect for someone with a very small yard or for those looking for little or no maintenance. The soil removed in excavating a pond can be utilized to create a mound or berm to provide elevation for a cascade. A waterfall can pass through terraced retaining walls on its way down to a pond at ground level. By passing through rather than over the top, it will give the impression that the waterfall always existed and the retaining wall was constructed later on either side. A backyard pond not only provides allure and charm to your property, it is as though you own a part of the Discovery Channel. The ponds occupants provide a never-ending and forever changing source of entertainment and education. From the antics of a pair of acrobatic turtles to the male crayfish, claws clashing and gnashing over the prize of a fair lady, each day becomes a new chapter in the life of your pond. Are you the type that might say, I dont ever want to own fish! and then eventually end up with several, even giving them all names? Ive seen this happen over and over again, because pond owners become personally attached to the inhabitants of their water garden pond as if they were family members or pets. At night a well-designed backyard pond becomes a whole new adventure, especially if you have built-in lighting. The cascading, splashing water against the lights create an amazing symphony of light and sound. Dancing light reflected on the surrounding rocks, plants, fence or house becomes hypnotic and mesmerizing. Most people only experience this atmosphere at expensive hotels or resorts. Now you can own the same experience in your own back yard.. If you are considering a water feature as an investment in your property, may I add several words of caution. Down the road, these may save you the heartache, sorrow and aggravation of dirty, murky, green, smelly water, sick or dead fish, leaky pond or waterfall, or high maintenance and energy costs. 1. Take your time. 2. Plan it out. 3. Research the subject thoroughly. 4. Seek out an expert in the field. A few years of experience are important. 5. Make sure the expert is licensed and bonded. 6. Accept only concrete and steel rebar construction. Never use a pond liner. Proponents of pond liners will claim there is a 40 or 50 year warranty on the liner. Not true! Its only true if you leave the pond liner in the box. It would work only in a perfect world where there were no gophers, squirrels, chipmunks, rats, tree roots, sharp rocks, pebbles or other such objects. Once you have a hole, it is impossible to find. Even a pin-hole will allow 5 gallons of water per day to pass. 7. Do not use submersible pumps. They are inefficient and expensive to operate and are difficult to maintain. Debris collects in them, requiring frequent cleaning. Submersibles can leak oil that may kill the pond inhabitants or, worse, short out and create a shock hazard. 8. Use a biological filter to help eliminate nitrates and nitrites from the water. (I recommend a pressurized back-flushable filter, not a gravity flow.) 9. Install a skimmer for removal of surface leaves and debris. 10. Use two anti-vortex drains on the bottom of the pond for suction line to prevent whirlpools and fish or turtles from being sucked into the drain. 11. Make sure your pond is a minimum of three feet deep to regulate water temperature in the summer months and to discourage herons and raccoons from dining out. 12. Build caves and ledges for turtles and fish to hide in. 13. Install an ultraviolet light to kill bacteria that cause smells and pathogens that kill fish and algae spores that create green water. 14. Do not use mechanical auto-fill valves; only use an electronic one like the AquaFill System. It does not stick or malfunction thus preventing pond overflow and dead fish from chlorine poisoning. 15. Use plenty of water plants in the falls and pond. They provide extra oxygen and food for the fish and act as natural filters, utilizing the nitrate nitrogen in the water. 16. Use a high-efficiency, out-of-pond pump that conserves energy. By operating it 24 hours a day, a high-quality biofilter (such as one made by Aqua Ultra Violet) will receive a continuous flow of oxygenated water, which the anaerobic bacteria require in order to live. The bacteria are essential for breaking down hydrocarbons, nitrates and nitrites in the water. 17. Make sure you have proper drainage around the pond and waterfall so run-off from the rain storms does not enter the pond and contaminate it with silt, fertilizer, pesticides, etc. 18. Learn basic pond maintenance. (An ounce of prevention is worth a [pond] cure.) When I say everyone should have a waterfall, Im not simply promoting my lifes passion. Considering how much enjoyment a water garden and waterfall can give you, dollar for dollar, cubic foot for cubic foot, hour for hour, it is your best buy for many long, healthy and happy years to come. From my experience with hundreds of pond owners in San Diego, I have discovered that the money spent on a well designed garden pond and waterfall will surely bring you more long term pleasure and joy than anything you ever purchased in your life. The Healing Arts: Exploring Heart-Consciousness, Part 2; You Can Remember It

Thursday, January 24th, 2008

By Russ Reina In the last installment I presented just a few examples of knowledge that science has gained that indicates the heart is not only a pumping organ, but also a center for the assimilation of information. These few were chosen to allow a mental picture to help bridge the gap between concept and experience. Im well aware of the dangers of leaping to conclusions based on just a few facts. Were not allusions to heart-consciousness so much a part of all cultures, however, this information would not have the implications it does. But when you tally the list of people from all walks of life throughout all ages who have spoken about working with this seat of consciousness, and then learn that there is empirical evidence to support that your heart also conducts brain-like activity, the only thing left to do is to test it against your own experience. Spend a little time with the concepts that have been presented here. Now, find a place to relax and think/feel back to times when, instead of experiencing the moment as if looking through the windows of your eyes, you felt the seat of your consciousness to be in your chest. Can you recall times when, instead of logically working through the steps of A + B E x F = G, you simply knew (some people express it as in your gut) what direction to head, thing to do, emotion to express or answer to declare? Most of us dont have to think back any further than the last time we were in love. Do you recall how tuned-in you felt to the other person? Was this based on a linear thought process, or embrace a sequence of events that rapidly moved from sensing to feeling to interpreting to acting with hardly a moment or worry in the interim? Can you recall moments when moving in synch with that special other meant such clichs as reading her like a book, and anticipating his every need? Of course, we all know it can go deeper than this. For example, connection as a force has no spatial or time limitations. I recall a number of times when my mother, in the midst of, usually something to do with the kitchen and dinner now that I think of it, would clutch her chest and, exclaiming something like I need to call Anne! (her sister), pick up the phone only to hear Annes voice rather than a dial tone. Perhaps a more effective memory jog would be to go to a time after you spent, for example, a rapturous weekend with a lover. To what degree did you actually, consciously have to move away from that guiding feeling in your chest and, literally, back in to your brain? What did the transition back into your brain-consciousness feel like in your relation to the world? Another way of saying this is, metaphorically, how many times did you find you stopping yourself from hugging someone at the water cooler because you thought better of it? Lets go back a little further to when you were discovering this world for the first time, as a child. Can you recall, not the experience of wonder but being a part of that wonder? Can you recall a time when everything was speaking to you (and you did not hold back answering!)? Unfortunately, some of us have to go back further than others to re-connect with this way of being. Most of us, in fact, were socialized at a very early age to distrust our heartfelt impressions, disregard the things we knew in favor of things we could prove, and control our unbridled emotions rather than express ourselves as was appropriate and then move on to new realizations. Ironically enough, memories that often stand out are those where, amidst living the experience of being totally connected with the moment, there is a form of rebuke from an adult, basically communicating something like, Get down to Earth! And we do. We do get down to Earth quite quickly because the dominant culture teaches us what is acceptable and what is not. Those that dont learn these ways (and there will be more on this) are most often ostracized and punished. The reason I bring all this up is that Im here to re-mind you that at one time this way of looking at the world lived inside you, so it must be there at all times, especially now. For now, all I ask is that you allow the possibility that you have more than one center of consciousness in your body, that you are capable of accessing it again, and that you can strengthen your ability to apply it to, yes, even this practical world! The seed that Im hoping to plant is that you simply become curious about relating to the world through the consciousness of your heart and become willing to exercise the muscles that you have that help you use it along with your brain. In the next installment, Ill be talking about heart-consciousness and the indigenous way of being. External Quality of Care Reviews for Provider Organizations

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Skip_Freedman] Skip Freedman If your hospital or a medical group has doctors seeing patients on a regular basis, you need to perform quality management functions to determined and verify the proper quality of care. Traditionally organizations do this internally using their own nursing resources and physician peer panels. Increasingly, companies are outsourcing this type of activity to an Independent Review Organization which can assign a specialist to look at specific cases and determine root cause analysis of any care deficiencies. This makes sense when the hospital or medical group has a shortage of specialist availability to look at cases that are complex and require a specific specialist to review a sentinel event. Outsourcing this function is becoming more common among leading medical organizations and hospitals. We’re working with the top three hospital chains in the country and they are increasingly viewing peer review as a non-core activity that can be cost effectively and easily outsourced. They understand that this makes sense, because they can get it done faster using and Independent Review Organization then they can internally. They also understand that when sentinel events occur, and their organization risks expensive lawsuits or sanctions, the cost of actually performing these external hospital peer reviews is miniscule in comparison. Thats why providers are looking more and more to outsource quality of care reviews to Independent Review Organizations like Allmed. About AllMed Healthcare Management Founded in 1995, AllMed is a URAC-accredited Independent Review Organization (IRO) serving insurance payers, providers, TPAs and claims managers nationwide. Tips For Surviving As A Corporate Refugee

Monday, January 21st, 2008

By Lora J Adrianse In her book “Are You A Corporate Refugee”, Ruth Luban associates “corporate refugees” with refugees who never intend to leave their home country. People who are uprooted from the familiar terrain, customs and native language they’ve known for a very long time. From my own experience as a corporate refugee over the past year, I can validate that the sense of loss can be overwhelming at times. The loss of a secure income is significant in itself, but when it compounds with the loss of identity, structure and community, there are times when it’s paralyzing. Today, almost a year later, I proudly consider myself a Corporate Refugee who has successfully navigated the grueling journey and emerged with an amazing new sense of purpose and freedom! With that in mind, I offer you tips for surviving from my own experience. Give Yourself Time To Heal Acknowledge the fact that you have been thrown into a life changing experience. Before you can move toward the future it’s important to resolve the past. Just as in the loss of a loved one, there are stages of grief you will need to deal with. Chances are you will feel denial, anger, bargaining, and depression before you get to acceptance. Expect it, accept it, and try to have the forethought to recognize where you are in the process. Take Advantage Of Your New “Lack Of” Schedule One of the greatest advantages you have right now is “time”. Even though much of that time will be preoccupied with processing your thoughts, there are no boundaries around where and when you do that. Turn off your alarm, forget your bedtime and let your body reset it’s own clock. On gorgeous days go out and explore during times you would have been working. Whether you’re running your toes through the grass, sitting on the beach or running errands, you’ll discover sights, sounds, and people you haven’t experienced at that time before. Cold, rainy days are great for putting your nose in a good book, clearing out clutter and browsing great bookstores. Like it or not, your time is your own now, take advantage of it. Soul Search And Rediscover Your Passions This is NOT the time to make major life decisions, but it’s a perfect time to re evaluate what is most important to you. When you were 10 years old, what was it you wanted to be when you grew up? If you went in another direction, is it time to explore that option now? What are your values, your needs, your personal boundaries? What is it that you love so much you get lost in time? What is it that makes you laugh until you wet your pants? What have you always wanted to do, but never had the chance? The time is right to explore these things about yourself. Evolve Rather Than Revolve This is a time of evolution for you, not a revolution. Based on what you’re doing, or not doing, things will change. You’ll think about and do things differently than you did before. Things that worked for you before will no longer work. You’ll see things you didn’t see before. Take time to “just notice” without judgment. It doesn’t need to be about shoulds, coulds, good or bad. It just is, so just notice. Let Go And Let Be I’m a believer that we have the power to influence outcomes, but we can’t control them. In other words, what will be will be. I also believe that the universe is constantly sending us messages. If you don’t listen to the messages, you get to learn the lessons. Save yourself the frustration and struggle of trying to control outcomes. Maintain Undeniable Faith Even if it’s not clear now, never lose faith in yourself or your abilities. Your past successes are validations that you have what it takes to navigate and emerge from this experience with a greater sense of understanding and appreciation. How To Get Rid Of Gophers Humanely

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

By Michael Aral Small as they are, gophers can be a serious nuisance. The good news, though, is that you can get rid of them for good humanely. Despite what all the rodent poisons on the market imply, killing gophers isnt a long-term solution. There will always be more to replace the ones you killed. To get rid of gophers for any length of time, youll need to make your property either impossible for gophers to get into or so unappealing that they stay away voluntarily. Doing this is easier than it may sound. Get them out and keep them out If gophers are only a problem in your flower and vegetable beds, try building raised beds. These not only make gardening easier, but when protected from beneath, they can also keep burrowing animals out. When you build the bed, make it gopher-proof by first laying down a sheet of hardware cloth to cover the bottom of the bed area. Another trick is to install rhizome barriers around your planting beds. These underground barriers are usually used to contain rapidly spreading plants, but they also keep out gophers. Gophers that are eating up your lawn, on the other hand, can be caught unharmed with live traps designed for small rodents and moved to a wilderness area. Unless youre experienced at live trapping rodents, though, its best to leave this one to the professionals. Environmentally friendly pest control companies like Animal Problems? Inc., of Florida are licensed to safely remove a variety of animals, including gophers. To keep gophers from returning once you get rid of them, consider building a barrier around your property. Because gophers can’t climb, a solid one-foot-high fence buried six to 12 inches into the ground around the perimeter of your property is enough to stop gophers from getting in. Offend their sensibilities The smells from your yard and garden are what attract gophers and you can get rid of the gophers again by altering those smells. Products like Mole-otov Cocktail made by Not Tonight Deer! or Whole Control Spray by Nixalite use non-toxic ingredients to make gophers favorite foods unappetizing so the rodents no longer have a reason to hang around your garden. To use these products, just attach the container to a garden hose, turn the water on and spray the repellent over the gopher-populated area. Mole-Med by Gardens Alive, another rodent repellent, can be spread on the lawn either wet or dry. Shake things up Gophers have a very keen sense of hearing and sensitivity to ground vibration, so theyll avoid areas where there are constant sounds and movements in the ground. Installing devices that create these annoyances is a cheap and easy way how to get rid of gophers. Sonic rodent repelling units for the garden are self-contained spikes that can be inserted into the ground to create noises so irritating to the gophers that they stay away. These sounds are so subtle, though, that not even dogs are bothered by them. One of the most popular devices is the Sonic Molechaser from Molechasers International. The smaller model can keep an area of approximately 11,250 sq. ft. (1045 sq. meters) gopher-free and the larger one covers up to 13,500 sq. ft. (approx. 1250 sq. meters). Theres also a solar-powered model. This model saves batteries, but due to the solar panel, its a little more visible than the electronic types and it only covers up to 7,500 sq. feet (approx. 700 sq. meters). Another sound gophers avoid is that of their predators, owls and hawks. Electronic birdcall imitators like the Bird Sound Device available from U-Spray, Inc. can scare off gophers for 10,000 sq. ft. (930 sq. meters) around. The Bird Sound Device is triggered by a motion detector, so to use it to get rid of gophers, place it beside a light at night when the gophers are active. How to get rid of gophers the all-natural way Faking the sound of predatory birds can work well, but the real thing is even better. Barn owls are one of the gophers main predators, so if this bird is native to your area, put up a barn owl box on your property to attract a natural gopher prevention system. The only drawback is that barn owls look for new homes only in the spring, so you may not be able to attract one immediately. If youre looking for an environmentally friendly way to get rid of gophers that are snacking on your lawn and garden, youve got several affordable and easy-to-use options. While not everyone can get a barn owl to drop by, plant barriers and smell- or sound-based gopher repellents can work just as well.
