Screening Job Applicants - What Really Goes On Behind Closed Doors?

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

By Jason Adams The first goal of any hiring manager is not to find a candidate, but to ELIMINATE unqualified candidates. Most hiring managers reading your resume will take the pile of up to 500 letters they received and try to separate the definite “no’s’ (Don’t Call) into one pile and the interesting resumes into the second pile (Might Call). They then go back and eliminate again until what they have is a manageable pile (5-10 max) of pre-qualified candidates (To Call). Getting into the second pile (Might Call) is your first goal. The first cut may take you from a stack of 500 resumes to a smaller yet still intimidating stack of 20. At 20 resumes, the reader will spend 2-3 minutes on each resume versus just a few seconds the first time through. The objective here for the hiring manager is to take the stack of 20 down to a more manageable 5-10 resumes mentioned above. At 5-10 resumes, the reader will be spending some quality time reading what you have written. They may be highlighting and making notes about the things that interest them the most or closely align with what they are looking for. A few more resumes will be eliminated during this round, but not necessarily put back into the Don’t Call pile. These candidates go into the Might Call pile but will only be called only if the hiring manager cannot find enough qualified candidates from 4-8 resumes they have left. This is the To Call pile that you want to end up in. The hiring manager begins to make some calls and do some initial phone interviews. From here a few more people may be eliminated for a variety of reasons. Some of the people may have already taken other positions or the hiring manager does not like the candidate enough to invite him or her in for a face-to-face interview. The hiring manager will keep interviewing until they have invited 3-5 people in for a personal interview. As the realistic numbers I’ve indicated above reveal, in order to be invited in for an interview, you’ll need to have a resume and cover letter better than 495 other candidates. Notice I did not say you needed more education, better experience or more years on the job than the other people applying for the same job. You just need to have better paperwork…”you just need a better story.” This will be the topic of a future article. Other Useful Equipment In The Garden

Tuesday, October 30th, 2007

By Robert Gettle With a pistol grip or twist type nozzle a garden hose is necessary for watering plants and lawn as well as for washing cars or outdoor furniture. Hoses come in half inch or three quarter-inch diameter. They are sold in lengths up to 75 feet. They may be plastic or rubber tubing. Attaching to the hose to dispense water a sprinkler is an indispensable part of the lawn and garden tools. A plastic container with a spray nozzle that attaches to the end of the hose, a hose sprayer is used to spray fertilizers or pesticides that are mixed with water. A kneeling pad or old pillow is essential to cushion your knees from the hard uneven earth. A kneeling pad or seat combination has handles which make it easier for older people to get up from the ground. The work of transporting large bags of mulch or several trays of flowers is made much easier with a wheel barrow or utility cart. It is also great for hauling debris to a compost pile. A bucket with a handle, or a tool tote. Will keep garden tools and gloves in one container easily moved where ever you are working. A sprinkling can is handy for small area watering and water plants that need special fertilizer. A metal or plastic container on a two wheeled cart with a mechanism for dispensing seed and fertilizer, a drop spreader, broadcasts automatically as you walk behind it and push it. A smaller version of the drop spreader a hand held broadcast spreader is filled with seed or fertilizer, as you walk and turn a handle that dispenses the contents.A muscled powered or push lawnmower is great for small grass areas or for any one who wants to get some exercise while cutting the lawn. It is friendly to the environment because it uses no gas oil or electricity therefore it causes no fumes. Gas and electric mowers come in sizes from a standard 3.5 hp to a 18 hp riding tractor mower. Student Loan Consolidation Center

Monday, October 29th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Gibran_Selman]Gibran Selman It is not always easy to pay thousands of dollars every year for college tuition fees, on top of the expenses for books, housing and transportation. Due to the large amount colleges charge for tuition and other fees, students often end up in debt even before they have started a career. As a result, many college students opt for government educational loans to take care of the college fees at a reasonable interest rate. Student loan debt consolidation allows the students to reduce the amount of their monthly installments to repay their student loans. Refinancing your student loans will allow you to avail of lower interest rates and avoid the hassles of paying several monthly installments. The rates offered for a student consolidation loan vary depending on your individual credit history and the way you are dealing with your current creditors. The eligibility criterion and the requirements for applying for a student debt consolidation loan may again vary from one lender to another. There are certain aspects that need to be kept in mind while applying for a student debt consolidation loan. It is important to ensure that the interest rate of your loan does not exceed the consolidated rate of your current loans. If you are thinking of student loan consolidation, you will have a number of options to choose from. However, all student consolidation centers would have some basic options that can help you reduce your total debt and monthly expenditure. All student loan consolidation centers will offer minimum interest rates, currently 1.625 percent fixed interest for the loan period. The ‘Department of Education’ is offering a rate 3.37 percent at present. A student may get an additional discount rate of 0.25 percent at all student loan consolidation centers if they opt for auto debit. Most student loan consolidation centers will offer flexible payment options. Which can give students extra relief on top of having their monthly installments reduced up to 50 to 60 percent. Some private centers are associated with specific lending agencies, and will tend to promote their own brand of consolidation loans. In such cases, students may not be given the opportunity to study several loan offers and negotiate to pick a loan according to their preference. To help the students, these loan consolidation centers build up cost-effective debt consolidation programs at low prices. They have representatives who exercise their rapport and expertise while negotiating the creditors to find lower interest rates or specific terms that best suit the student’s needs. Specific discount rates are also offered by these centers. Debt consolidation centers also offer personalized counseling service to help the students understand their own needs and guide them to make the right choice. Many of these centers are located near the college campus making it easily accessible for the students. While non-profit debt consolidation centers do not take fees from their clients for setting up loan consolidation programs, these centers do, at times, accept multiple checks from their clients and send out single consolidated payments. While comparing and choosing the best lender or the student loan consolidation center to use you should consider those who offer flexible application procedures such as online application including online account management facilities. The quality of the customer service is also very important while choosing a student loan debt consolidation center. While applying for a student loan consolidation, you need to ensure that you have the name and address of the consolidation center, current rates of interest and current loan balances. Dating After 40: Sleepover Do’s and Don’ts

Sunday, October 28th, 2007

By R.L. Morgan “Sleepover? For adults?” you may be asking. “What do you mean?” Two-person pajama party. Duo slumber party. Couple cuddle fest. Jammie jam. No-sex sleepover. It can happen early in the relationship. You’re not ready to have sex, so you only cuddle and snooze with your new sweetie all night. Sleepovers are living on the edge. There is potential danger. You have to trust the guy enough to know he won’t force you to do anything you don’t want to do. I’m not advocating them, however, I know they happen. I’ll share some guidelines if you decide it is right for you. When are sleepovers likely to happen? When you’ve been out on a date until late. Your date brings you home, but is exhausted and has a long drive ahead, or has had a tad too much to drink so is uncomfortable driving. Coffee would barely make a dent in his alertness. He’s been a gentleman in every encounter with you. You haven’t had to reel him in. He’s shown he is trustworthy through his actions and words. He’s honored your boundaries. One option is for him to sleep in the guest room or on the couch. But know that if there are sparks between you, one of you may join the other before morning. More often sleepovers are in the same bed. How tos: * Explain he can stay, but there will be no sex of any kind. Some people have Clintonian definitions of sex, so be clear you mean no sex. * Clothing is not optional. At minimum, undies must stay on, in their proper place (around one’s knees does not count as “on,” although technically they are on your body). Ideally, you both wear and keep on something non-sexy, e.g., t-shirts and sweat pants, pajamas tops and bottoms. Flannel or cotton, not silk or satin. The less exposed skin the better, so avoid camisoles. I’m not meaning to sound prudish, but you want to be uninviting in this situation. Don’t don your frilly, see-through negligee for a sleepover. Save it for later. It will only invite trouble. * Expect there will be some “exploration” — unless you have a bundling board. It is hard for two attracted people to keep their hands off each other. So verbalize your boundaries and if his hand “slips” reinforce what’s OK by moving it as well as restating your boundary. If this “slippage” happens more than a couple of times, kick him out. * You have to stick to your own rules. You can’t change midway and say, “You feel so good, let’s have sex.” You are then sending mixed messages and he won’t want to honor your limits in the future because he won’t think you’re serious about them. * Don’t be a temptress to test his mettle. It is hard enough for two people to lie together, so don’t let your hand “slip” to a sensitive zone, nor engage in passionate kissing or other provocative behaviors. You are putting him in a double bind and most mortals would not pass the test. Don’t do this. So with all these rules, why do it? And why wouldn’t you? The pros: * You confirm you can trust him to honor your wishes. If you can trust him in the face of temptation, it will deepen the relationship. * There is something delicious about sleeping intertwined with someone you care about. The cons: * You may not get a lot of sleep. Sleeping with someone new takes some getting used to. It’s easy to wake when he turns. He may snore. Sleeping with your head on his chest may sound romantic, but it can create neck pain. * He will be there in the morning, when you’ll have morning breath, possibly a hangover, and sans makeup. You may also have to share bathroom time before work, find him a toothbrush and razor, make him breakfast. Sleepovers are really a matter of trust. For a sleepover to be successful you have to have clearly defined boundaries and confidence in your and his ability to respect them. Be firm in your rules. Don’t waffle. When pajama parties work, they are a delicious way to deepen your relationship. R.L. Your Body Clock Tells the Best Time

Saturday, October 27th, 2007

By Kevin Hinton William Blake wrote a very apt poem as a guideline to increase one’s health quotient. Think in the morning Act in the noon Eat in the evening Sleep in the night. From a Natural Health point of view, what Blake is saying may be interpreted as: All life operates in rhythms and we call these rhythms Circadian Cycles. We observe and respond to many and varied cycles, both inside and outside the body. - Perhaps the most obvious of all cycles outside of the body are the changes in season in exact relation to the movement of the planets. - Within the body - sleep, digestion and reproduction are but a few of the 100 or so circadian rhythms/cycles by which we are governed. If we use a 24 hour clock to set our body clock we will find that: THINKING is best accomplished in the early hours of the day. many writers, artists and musicians tell stories of waking early and producing outlines of works that have become masterpieces of the arts. many teachers of esoteric learning suggest that meditation is best practised between the hours of 3 and 5 am. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY is best done before noon. this is a time of elimination and excretion from the body activity assists in squeezing the lymphatic system that carries waste toward the organs of elimination. EATING should begin at noon and approximately 6 hours later. this allows time for the digestive cycle to be completed. it is not necessary to eat the Breakfast meal when first rising. the cycle of elimination and excretion goes on until approximately mid-day. I have not eaten Breakfast for almost 15 years now and can testify as to the efficacy of this practise. most of the of the greatest naturopaths of the last 200 years taught the efficacy of the No Breakfast Plan SLEEP is one of the most ignored cycles. we should rise and retire with the sun, however, the social structure of western civilization deems this almost unfathomable. suffice it to say that we need enough sleep (while it is dark) to restore our nervous energy so that we may complete the tasks that we assign to ourselves during the daylight hours. All of life resounds in a harmonious rhythm Vibrant health is achieved by harmonising our own personal cycles with those of nature. All the best in vibrating with your own cycles. 10 Free Gardening Products!

Friday, October 26th, 2007

By Linda Gray One of the pleasurable spin-offs in organic gardening is finding alternative ways of coming up with the same, if not better, end result….. Household throwaways can be valuable to the alternate enthusiast. Here are ten recyclable ideas to make gardening a little less hard on the pocket! 1. Hedge clippings: Instead of burning or direct composting, beg, borrow or even buy, if the quantity justifies the price, an electric garden muncher. Branches up to an inch in diameter are posted into a slot and the machine munches them up into small chips. Spread these chips thickly around shrubs or fruit trees to help keep moisture in, and control the temperature of the soil. 2. Food Waste: All food waste must be composted. Composting is becoming quite an art form, and special composting bins can be bought, or very simply made. There are many different theories and each gardener will find his or her preferred way. Keeping the compost fairly warm is the overall key to a good result. Or, if you’re in no hurry, simply keep adding to a heap, and dig out the bottom when required. Sieve before using and the compost will be ready for planting small plants and even seeds. 3. Old carpets, large damaged cardboard boxes: and similar materials can be laid over the vegetable plot in autumn to help prevent those early spring weeds appearing. Spread over a whole patch and weigh down with stones or logs. Lift off on a sunny day in early spring a few days before digging. 4. Paint trays: Keep old roller painting trays and similar containers for seed trays. Punch a few holes in the bottom for drainage. Add a little fine gravel before filling with seed compost. Seed trays shouldn’t be deeper than 15cm. 5. Yoghurt pots: All plastic yoghurt or dessert pots can be washed and saved for re-potting seedlings. Make a hole in the bottom of each and add a little fine gravel before filling with compost or soil.. 6. Glass jars: Glass jars with sealable lids are excellent for storing seeds, beans and peas for planting next year. (Safe from mice as well) After washing the jars, dry in the oven to remove all traces of moisture before storing your seeds. Collect dark glass jars, or wrap paper round clear jars to prevent seeds being damaged by light. 7. Ice Lolly sticks: Make perfect row markers in your seed trays or greenhouse beds. The wooden ones won’t last for ever but you can at least write on them with pen, pencil or crayons! 8. Wire coat hangers: Make mini-cloches with discarded or broken wire coat hangers. Pull into a square shape. Place the hook in the soil and push down gently until the natural bend in the wire rests on top of the soil. Place another a short distance away in your seed bed to create two ends of a cloche. Now throw over a sheet of plastic and hold down with logs or stones. Note: this will work only when creating very small cloches. 9. Clear plastic: Keep any clear plastic containers that could be placed upside down over a plant. Cut a mineral water bottle in half to make two handy individual cloches. Large sheets of clear plastic from packaged household items are fine for throwing over mini coat hanger cloches. 10. Aluminium bottle tops: Keep aluminium tops from milk or juice bottles, and also coloured foil around beer or wine bottles. Thread together to make a bird scarer. Simply thread with thick cotton and hang on your fruit bushes before the birds find the new fruits. Look out for other tools for the garden from kitchen throwaways such as: old kitchen spoons and forks for transplanting tiny plants in the greenhouse. Leaky buckets for harvesting small quantities of potatoes, carrots etc; light wooden boxes for harvesting salads through the summer, and transporting pots etc; Keep an eye on that rubbish bag and turn today’s throwaways into tomorrow’s tools! How to tell if a Woman likes to be Dominated

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

By Don Diebel TIP #1 - SOME SINGLE WOMEN CRAVE A MAN WHO IS DOMINATING, “MACHO,” AND EVEN JUST A LITTLE BIT CRUEL! - It’s important to sensitively explore the unfulfilled needs of the woman you have met. At times, in the nature of being just a wee bit unpredictable and complex, you may act dominating, bossy, even slightly sadistic. Watch her reactions closely when you do! If you see a glint in her eyes, a pleasurable submissiveness, a suddenly more positive response to you - you may be dealing with a single woman who has a masochistic need to be dominated and mistreated. If such behavior comes easy and natural for you, it can be exceedingly effective with such a woman. TIP #2 - OPEN YOUR EYES TO THE UNCONVENTIONAL BEAUTY AND SEX APPEAL of the “plain-looking” single woman. Taste in beauty and sex appeal is often a purely subjective quality. Many single women whose faces and figures attract no public attention or enthusiasm may exert a provocative, tantalizing, even aphrodisiacal effect upon you personally…if you open your eyes and find those subtle elements in her which only you can appreciate and cherish! TIP #3 - OCCASIONALLY BE UNPREDICTABLE! Many women, however much they value reliability and security in their man, also tend to take for granted, and to undervalue a man who is too ordinary, too conformist, too dependably predictable. Don’t do it too often, and don’t hurt her needlessly, but occasionally demonstrate unpredictable and unexpected qualities. Leave at least a slight touch of mystery and romantic secrecy about your innermost self. For example, suddenly take a trip without advance warning and write to her from your temporary distant stopping point. Take her on a date to some place she has never been before and which she could not have expected from your previous behavior. Use your imagination to display other romantic touches of mystery and unpredictability. For example, you may suddenly send her a present which opens up a completely unsuspected but attractive facet of yourself to her admiring contemplation! TIP #4 - LOFTY, DRIVING AMBITION IS ATTRACTIVE TO SOME SINGLE WOMEN. Spin beautiful dreams of the future for her, and weave her into them! Express your highest, most dramatic ambitions and goals to her. Express them vividly, as concretely and confidently as possible. Give her the feeling that she will go along with you and share the heights, the glory, the success, and your mutual happiness! This article written by Don Diebel (Americas #1 Singles Expert). How Our Ancestors Introduced Herbal Remedies to the Modern World

Wednesday, October 24th, 2007

By James Penn Without herbal medicine, modern medicine would not be in the advanced stage that it is. Our species has relied on plants for thousands of years not only for nutrition, but to ease ailments that develop within our minds and bodies. The parts of an herb have helped us survive disease and pestilence and contributed to our survival for as long as humans have existed. Over time, we have learned which herbs and parts of a plant provide value to our lives and which have the potential to cause damage. We know that our ancestors used herbal remedies because archeologists have unearthed evidence that they used plant-based treatments all over the world. Whats intriguing is that cultures on a global scale, which had no known contact with one another, all used herbal remedies in much the same way testing and tracking what worked and what didnt in the herbal world of remedies. As time proved some assumptions correct, our ancestors passed the teachings about herbal treatments down through familial lineage. They also created texts to help others study and learn about the techniques used in taking a natural approach to healing. It was from our ancestral roots that modern-day pharmaceutical companies derived their synthetic drugs today. They work to try to recreate the natural effects herbal treatments deliver to the human body, sometimes succeeding and often failing. Aspiring, for example, was created as a replica of the substance found in willow bark that provides a natural pain reliever. Botanical treatments do not provide the same side effects that synthetic drugs do, which accounts for the reason why many modern-day consumers are steering away from man-made compounds and concentrating on the return to their roots of herbal remedies and natural treatments. When our ancestors began cultivating plants for their own use, they included herbal gardens that provided immediate access to particular plants they found soothing for their ailments, including aloe, peppermint, mustard, and more. As the cultures began to merge throughout the years and travelers started exploring the world, ideas were exchanged and treatments one culture found useful were now in the hands of another culture who previously didnt have access to such findings or even the plants themselves, before trade. Herbs were so important to our ancestors that they became a part of religious rituals and were highly valued. Today, not only do consumers see the significance in promoting herbal treatments, but doctors are aligning with this way of thinking as well. Why 90% Of Men Give Up Online Dating Within 3 Months

Sunday, October 21st, 2007

By Jason King It may sound incredible but 90% of single men give up online dating after 3 months of trying. This gives the 10% that are not actually trying, and are having a good go at it, rich pickings of all the single women available to them. So where do these single men go wrong? A free trial is exactly that One of the first mistakes single men make when they start online dating is treating their free trial as a lifetime membership. A free trial means a free trial. You get to try out a few of the online dating services features to see what they offer you, but it isnt the way to get yourself on a date. Sending flirts The problem with a free trial is the only form of communication you can have with another member of the online dating web site is by sending them a flirt. This is a good way to show interest in another single woman, and she will take it as you are showing interest, but to get her to start replying to your interest youll need to send her an email. Flirts and winks have a very low response rate, and is the reason why you get to send them on your free trial. If they were an excellent form of communication you would have to pay to use them. An email shows another women that youre confident, and want to start a conversation with her. Thats why shes joined the internet dating service, to communicate with other single men. If a woman sees that another man cant pay $25 for a months membership shes not going to expect to be wined and dined on her first date. Their online dating profile When most single men set up their free trial they treat their profile as a free trial as well. Setting up a profile to start using the online dating service takes a few minutes. Setting up a profile that is going to show another online dater that youre serious about online dating takes nearer to half an hour. The profile in a few minutes is a much easier option, and is the option that gets chosen over 90% of the time. The easier option also includes creating a profile without a photo attached to it. Most single women wont reply to an email to someone without a photo on their profile even if the single man has paid for a membership. Conclusion Single men need top pay for at least one months membership to meet another women at an online dating web site. These single women are waiting to be contacted, and they want to be contacted with emails that show you have a personality. All of the short cuts to romance mentioned above just lead to single men not getting anywhere, which makes them think online dating doesnt work then they give up. Its the same as meeting someone in a bar. Single women want to be approached, and then spoken too. Just showing interest from the other side of the bar wouldnt get most single men a date. At the end of the day dating will cost you money online and offline. $25 a month is a small price to pay if it means youll meet someone to spend the rest of your life with.
