M.M. Schneerson: Messiah or Member of the Ibbur Class

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Shael Siegel The ultra-orthodox are once again in a tizzy about developments in the Lubavitch/Chabad hassidic sect. They are shocked that so many of their members can have a mishichist (messianic) twist to their theology. Apparently, when their Rabbi, M.M. Schneerson, died there were some, probably a minority, who did not accept his death. They assumed that he was the Messiah and would appear in the streets of Jerusalem in a white Mercedes S500. Even though arriving in a Mercedes would not necessarily be politically correct, the fact that he was the Messiah means that history would be revised. Indeed, his coming (assuming Schneerson is of the House of David) will restore the glory of Israel and all the Jews will return there. It is a fantastic story and utterly believable– if you believe in a personal Messiah as elaborated on by the Rambam (Maimonides) and others. What amazes me is the same people who cast doubt on the claims of the mishichistim (messianic) believe in the myth of a personal messiah. If you believe in a personal moshiach (messiah), then there is not much of a leap of faith to believe in M.M. Shneerson as the moshiach incarnate. Why not? They are both rooted in faith. Faith is a very powerful tool and can be used for the better or detriment of mankind. It can be used and exploited by cult leaders for personal aggrandizement or for the greater glory of humanity. The Jewish people claim to have survived through the ages because they are faith based. They believed that no matter how bad it got, there would be, at the end of that very dark tunnel, a savior. It actually sounds like a story one would tell his children. But that is exactly what they were– children, emotionally and intellectually less sophisticated than they are today. After all, it was their parents and grandparents generation that went through the concentration camps and gas chambers of Europe. There was no Moshiach there to save an entire continent of Jews from murder. To maintain that kind of faith is really blind faith– the kind of faith one expects from a dog, even after its master has abused it non-stop from the day he came into his life. Ask Job, better yet, read him. They can not let go of this image of a moshiach because where will Jews be without hope? In this world there are two kinds of people: followers and leaders. The followers are those who live on hope, the kind that need a rabbi to think for them– people who hold a job until they retire; never take an independent step; never explore the greater world of people or ideas. They are fatalists, hachol beyedei hashem (everything is in God’s hands) who say after every worded phrase, baruch hashem, (praise God), as though they would not have been able to do what they did without assistance. Then there are the leaders. They tend to be a bit irreverent because they can think for themselves. They are builders who do not depend on hope– people that we call self starters, entrepreneurs, and independent minded. They are not fatalists, but determinists, who prefer to take chances depending on their own true grit. The European Zionists of the 19th and 20th century were of this second category. There is an old parable in Pirkei Avot eiza hu chacham? Haroeh es hanolod,” that the wise man is the one who can anticipate or intuit the future. They saw the writing on the wall in anti-Semitic Europe and were not about to wait for mythical moshiach to arrive on the scene and do some “abra kadabra.” Then there were the followers, those with faith, who were determined to wait, because that is what their rabbis told them to do. They never had real faith, which implies that you have some belief in yourself, to be able to validate ideas and thoughts. How can you be creative, contribute to society and build a community if you have no faith in yourself? To abdicate it all to a leader is pure folly. History bears this out. So what is the difference between those who accept M.M. Schneerson as the moshiach and those who treat these mishichistim like pariahs? In truth, there really is no difference. Both groups fall into the first category of my construct. The mishichistim and those anti– mishichistim are both followers. The mishichistim believe that M.M. Schneerson is the moshiach, and the other group of followers believe in their gedolim (sages). Either way they lose, because they have abdicated their independence and ability to think critically. There is another side to this. The anti-mishichistim are not only followers like the mishichistim but are also dishonest with themselves. The resistance to M.M. Schneerson as the last great hope is the realization that if he is truly the messiah, then the Jewish community will have to make significant sacrifices (i.e. move to Israel) which they are not willing to do. Accepting the messiah is a heavy burden which a cursory look at Maimonides’ writings (Mishneh Torah, Hilkot Melakhim, Chapt. 11) will attest. The mishichistim are ahead of the game and maybe ought to be admired. While they carry the stigma of being followers, they are struggling with and showing some creativity, albeit infantile. Perhaps these are new beginning for a new group: mishichistim. What they are going through now is their “chevlai leida” (birth pangs). At worst, if M.M. Schneerson does not pan out to be the Messiah, maybe we can recommend him for a membership to Ibburim (spirits of the righteous dead). Mobile Oil Change Business and Corporate Office Complex Customers

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Lance Winslow One way to run your small mobile oil change business is to go after the customers who are employees at large corporations. This works well, although can be problematic if you do not set up the way you do business and maintain the schedule properly in advance. But one new comer to the industry writes to ask me a question on the business model and this type of potential customer. Here is the question that our business analyst and future mobile oil change entrepreneur asks; “One thing I can certainly state is that…you or none of your competitors have gone after the nickel and dime biz by concentrating on the large employer populations?? Both here in Ohio and my son out in Las Vegas find that such ops. do not target John & Jane Doe’s cars while at work for servicing…why is that? Cost prohibitive…liability lack of employer interest? Hell, I’d sell the ownership on packaging the service as a Benefit…and under WE care about our employees” Incorrect, as indeed there is much competition in mobile change business at Corporate Offices. Additionally having started OilChangeGuys.com, I understand the nickel and dime business at corporate office parks and corporations better than anyone else on the planet and that is not ego talking. There are many reasons why oil changes at big Corporations can be problematic, too many to list here, but our business analyst questioners approach in selling packaging, bundling and marketing as an Amenity like “Standard Parking” is wise. Indeed, that is something we have found positive for Corporations for on-site vehicle washing, auto detailing and Midas Muffler and other companies have also tapped into with their franchisees and networks. Yes, I agree on that. And as far as nickle and dime, I have no problems collecting $1 from 100 rather than $100 from one, with a potential to lose the one and your basket of eggs to boot. Consider all this in 2006. “Lance Winslow” - Online Think Tank forum board. Stop Nail Biting Creams - Are They Worth It?

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Bob Dylan Nail biting generally results in the transfer of germs from your nails into your mouth. It is the same at nail salons also. When nail salon tools are used on different persons, it could lead to infection. People generally find using the hands a lot more difficult due to nail biting. Most of the compulsive nail biters find it difficult to write, draw, drive and type. Sustained nail biting for long period of time could also lead to substantia adamantinea of the front teeth which could lead to caries. It is quite surprising that there are many who claim that hypnosis proves quite useful to stop nail biting. There are many who claim that sheer will power could also do the trick. There is one more popular option. It is using nail biting creams. You need to paint your nails with this very bitter tasting nail cream and you are never going to put your nails in your mouth once you do it. These quit nail biting creams boast of some good characteristics. Nail biting cream generally contains aloe and vitamins A and E and all the ingredients being used are natural. Quit nail biting creams also works wonders for your cuticles making it all smooth and makes your nails stronger. And there is no age bar as such for using nail biting creams. Despite all such good effects of stop nail biting creams, the problem is that it is not a permanent solution. You apply the cream and its disgusting taste does not allow you to put the nails into your mouth. But once you stop applying the cream what happens? Yes, you revert back to the same old habit of nail biting and all the good effects that your nails and cuticles experienced vanish. Bob has a video with a secret that promises to teach how to stop biting nails in minutes. Cyber Bullies - What You And Your Kids Need To Know Now

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Greg Writer As thousands of students are looking forward to the launch of their next school year new school supplies, readying that new outfit or new uniform shirt, or just getting together with friends to embark on yet another scholastic roller coaster. There are many others, however, who look upon the beginning of school with trepidation. They are the new kids, the shy kids, the kids who would rather be anyplace else but in school. Why? The reasons take on a myriad of variations, many grounded in plain old coming of age angst or the end of summer depression, but within this group there are some kids who are in a class all by themselves. These are the kids who, as a result of embarrassment, shame, or fear, have either been, or fear that they will be harmed by their peers, or worse yet, by themselves because they believe they are alone and the problem is to big for them or anyone to handle. At first blush, you may be thinking Im talking about in the hood gang crime. Its nothing that obvious. In fact, this crime happens under the roofs in what appears to be happy families. This crime is insidious, cowardly, and criminal. Theres a ground swell of it within schools across this country. Its called Cyber Bullying. Cyber bullying takes what used to be schoolyard insults, pushing, and shoving to a whole new, expansive, and very dangerous level. The cyber bully uses email, chat rooms, instant messaging, cell phones and text messaging to insult, demean, threaten, humiliate, harass, deceive, impersonate, and in many cases, posts lewd or embarrassing photographs online of their peer - while hiding behind a veil of anonymity that the Internet provides. On the middle school level, typical insults include comments like U R ugly, U R fat, U R a liar, Nobody likes you, however when kids reach 13, the comments are often sexual in nature, include profanity and detail true or untrue reports of promiscuity. Photos, which are sometimes altered, and video from cell phones are posted in emails and on familiar file sharing sites such as Myspace.com, Xanga.com, LiveJournal.com, Blogger.com, and others. Even poor childish choices such as when a student puts up a website devoted to posting pictures of the ugliest or fattest kids in school, or when a 7th grade girl in Manhattan posted a video that a boy sent her of him serenading a song to her to her because he liked her and she didnt like him back. It just seemed like a joke to her, that is, until it ended up being laughed at all over the Net. Needless to say, this young boy was devastated. Unlike the schoolyard bully, these attacks arent by some scary kid wanting to push his weight around. They can be by anyone or no one that the child knows. Tragically, its sometimes by someone that the child thought was a friend. And unlike the schoolyard bully, a cyber bully can be comprised of one or many kids and by the time the posting hits the Net, literally thousands, if not millions of people have seen it, if its been shared around the world. And unlike the schoolyard bully, the cyber bully hits their victim in the sanctity of their own home or bedroom where they feel that they cant escape. Suzanne Stanford, CEO of My Internet Safety Coach (http://www.myinternetsafetycoach.com) , notes: Often, kids are afraid to tell their parents for fear that their computer will be taken away or that their parents will make the situation worse”. What they dont realize is that unless the bullying stops immediately, it can escalate and leave permanent psychological scars. Thats one of the reasons Ms. Stanford recommends Childrens Educational Networks FREE Internet Filter and Parental Control software and there TUKI Browser for kids, available at http://www.TUKI.com. Kids need to know how to navigate safely within this environment, so theyll know how to prevent and protect themselves from these situations. Additionally, we make it very clear to kids who might want to engage in this type of activity, that there are severe personal consequences to their behavior. For example, we want them to consider before they make poor choices that whatever is posted on the Net is there forever, and as much as they may regret later that they did this to someone, the damage is done and irreversible. Experts in the field state that victims of these crimes suffer psychological trauma requiring professional help, have had to move to other schools, their mental state has resulted in their grades dropping to such a degree that they cannot qualify for college upon high school graduation; many are afraid to form close relationships with new people; and in more severe cases, suicide or murder has resulted. These are not just childhood pranks. These are serious crimes, and several states are enacting laws, such as Florida, making these emails felonies. In Pennsylvania, cyber bullying, harassment and stalking carry stiff jail sentences and fines for those convicted. Cyber bullies need to realize that they may be able to hide from their victims behind screen names, but they cannot hide from law enforcement. Mark Franek, Dean of Students at the William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, explained the process very well: Each time the Internet is accessed, an IP (Internet Protocol) address is established. The 12 numerals punctuated by the 3 periods is the electronic fingerprint that can be accessed by the authorities to trace all electronic communications between computers and/or mobile phones. No computer or mobile phone or its user is really anonymous in cyberspace. According to a survey conducted in June of 2000 by The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on 1,500 children aged 10-17, 1 in 17 youths had been threatened or harassed over the Internet and about one-third of those found the incidents extremely distressing. A study in Britain in 2004 by NCH, a British childrens charity, found that 1 in 4 students had been bullied online. According to a CBS 2 (television) Special Report, conducted in 2005, more than 50% of 4-8th grade students have been bullied online. A recent nationwide survey of children and pre-teens by i-Safe America found that 57% of kids in grades 4-8 said someone had said hurtful or angry things to them online, 13% “quite often”; 53% admitted to saying mean or hurtful things to others, 7% “quite often”; 35% had been threatened online, 5% “quite often”; 42% had been bullied online, 5% “quite often”; and 58% had not told their parents or another adult about receiving mean or hurtful comments. In the UK, 33% of 9-to-19-year-olds who use email, chat, IM, and/or text messaging phones at least once a week “have been sent nasty or hurtful messages, and only 4% of parents say their child’s been bullied online, according to very recent research from the London School of Economics and Political Science. The Internet and cell phones have become, in large part, the fabric of the social lives of tweens and teens. As such, they are prime targets for this kind of attack. The first thing kids need to understand about Instant Messaging, and blogs (web logs) or live journals, is that the more personal information you give someone, the more it can be used against you by not only those whom you wanted to read it, but by others whom you didnt. Whenever you type something online and press send, you have just given up your privacy. Additionally, people online will pose to be people they arent for purposes of deception and in many cases, to commit crimes often stealing someones identity in the process. Some helpful tips for kids and teens regarding Cyber Bullying: Know that there are ALWAYS people available to help you that will make cyber bullies stop. These people are law enforcement; your school teacher, school counselor, principal; your parents or a nurturing, responsible adult; Cyber crime reporting sites such as: www.cybertipline.org, www.wiredsafety.net, www.KidSafe.com and safety@worldkids.net. Dont give out any personal information such as your name, your schools name or the name of any of the sports teams in which you play, your home telephone or cellular phone number, your address– including the city where your other parent lives if they are divorced, your parents office address, or the address of your school. Dont ever use your real name as your user or screen name. If you find that you are a victim of cyber bullying: Do not respond to the harassers directly because that is exactly what they want. Dont give them the pleasure of knowing that youre upset by it — Stay cool. Save and print out all messages DO NOT ERASE THE EMAILS. Report this crime to the police. If possible, report it as it is happening. Take notes: State the name of the harassers, if you know it, and all the details about the incident(s) If you are afraid to call the police, email a report of the incident(s) to cyber crime reporting sites such as: www.cybertipline.org, www.wiredsafety.org, or safety@worldkids.net. REMEMBER: YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF YOUR ONLINE EXPERIENCE. IT IS UNACCEPTABLE FOR YOU TO BE VERBALLY ABUSED OR THREATENED If you want to BLOCK USERS from contacting you via email, do the following: Look for the Block button. Sometimes it is in your Inbox. You block someone by highlighting or checking the box next to their email and then clicking on the Block button. When you do this, all the emails form the address you blocked will not go through to your Inbox. In Outlook Express, you go to a Blocked Senders List. To do this, do the following: Click on: Tools Message Rules Blocked Senders List Click on Add Type in the persons email address in the box, or right click on the name of the person in your contact list. Click either Mail Messages to block only emails; News Messages, if you want to block communication from a news group or someone in a newsgroup; or Mail and News Messages, to block the persons personal email and communication via the news group. If youre still getting messages from someone who is harassing you online, after you do the above, change your email address. Its an unsettling thought for any parent to think that their child may be a victim of a Cyber Bully, or be one. As difficult as it may be to consider, parents and teachers alike need to talk about this subject at home and in the classroom. We need to raise awareness of this issue and be pro-active. At present, lawmakers are drafting laws to prevent and prosecute the perpetrators of these crimes. Education, Vigilance, and strict laws are key in disarming bullies. I Don’t Like Mondays - A Study in Persistence with a Musical Slant

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Robin Piggott Who Ever said I dont like Mondays must have been on a different Planet? Best day in the week after all that week end guzzling and chilling out! Today here at Astral Towers we have had a real Saddam Hussein of a Monday. Actually all positiveso I am going to share some of the good stuff with you that will definitely make a difference to your Marketing efforts, if you will only learn the meaning of the word Persistence. Actually it was Bob, sorry Sir Bob Geldof who is known the world over for his remarkable feat in setting Up and Organising Live Aid in 1985, who coined the phrase with one of the Boomtown Rats hit Singles (are they called singles anymore?) in the late Seventies. Being rather fortunate (very) to be living in Dublin at that time and trying to impress my Wife- to- be with what I considered to be, an Encyclopaedic knowledge of the Music scene by dragging her off to, here a gig there-a gig, at every opportunity, it was my main purpose in life to absorb the music scene. Marketing was some way off at this stage although the seeds were being sown. One of those gigs that turned out to be life changing, became a memory stamped indelibly on the mind youve guessed it, a Rats gig at a small but swish Hotel in Dalkey, Co. Dublin called the Cliff Castle. No longer a Hotel I believe. It was the first time we had seen Bob and the gang and while the audience numbered about 45 souls (!) Bob showed what was to come by the most energetic performance I had seen in 8 years! Who would have thought a raggle taggle semi punk Band would give birth to a World Icon? What happened 8 years earlier in 1969? Well, my first glimpse of Rory Gallagher and Taste at the Round House in London. There is an article published about this remarkable Blues player at a rather well known Directory which shall remain nameless. It is no surprise that success comes with massive, persistent, action, in all walks of life and both these Bands went on to much greater things as a result of complete Dedication and Persistence although the Rats career was rather short lived. Bob as we all know went onto become one of the Pioneers of the 20th Century and will go down in history as the little guy from suburban Dublin who had a dream and who wouldnt take no for an answer! He was never afraid to speak his mind even on his first Guest appearances on the Late Late show which became one of the longest running T.V shows in history! Thanks in no small way to Sir Bob and his total non subservience to the Establishment! Belief in oneself, which is an admirable quality, but painfully difficult to sustain during periods of upheaval in ones life, is the key to success ultimately. Persistence should be the buzzword that you live by, in what ever field you choose to operate in. How can you maintain that Persistence when it all seems to be coming down around you? I guess the only way to sustain this much needed momentum, is to become a sponge and soak up every possible idea that you can and learn from the struggles and ultimate success of others. This means taking on board new ideas even if they are contrary to what you previously believed or were aware of. It means spending time with others who have a success mentality and not getting sucked into any level of negativity. It means never giving up until you have succeeded. Failure and sometimes multiple failures are just a rather unpleasant phase you have to go through until you are ready to handle what success will bring! In the early days of a salesmans career it is often the last call on a Friday that will give you the success you have been looking for all the week and that will break the feeling of failure. You knowgoing the extra mile, doing the extra call making one more appointment. Its a fantastic and exhilarating feeling to make that last call and make the sale when all you wanted to do is to slink home and wish the week hadnt happened! Life will never be the same when you have put into practise the Extra Mile Technique a few times and hey presto you find it actually works! Pretty much every successful Entrepreneur, in every field, has reached the end of the week without a sale, or the end of the month in debt, at some stage in their lives until the Persistency Button gets activated. Then its watch out Success here we come! Is there life after failure? Robin Piggott in his lengthy life has learnt one thing and that is that when the chips are down you just got to pick yourself up and aim for Top Gear and the Open Road!He runs a Driving School in Limerick, Ireland and is providing help and assistance to Learner Drivers from all ends of the Planet.Stop by the Web Site and blogs for a straight-up message. http://www.astralmotoring.ie http://NetNewbieProfits.blogspot.com Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Robin_Piggott http://EzineArticles.com/?I-Dont-Like-Mondays—A-Study-in-Persistence-with-a–Musical-Slant&id=136790 phentermine without doctors prescription phentermine diet pills in phentermine online no rx phentermine no doctor prescription

Start Working Before You Get Hired

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Kevin Donlin What if there were a way to *prove* to any sane employer that you alone were the one to hire? Would learning how to do that interest you? I thought so. I call this the “start-working-before-you-get-hired” job-hunting method. You can learn to do it in the next two minutes. And start getting more job leads today. Begin by understanding that getting hired for a job — any job — all boils down to one thing: proof. It’s one thing to claim you’re the one to hire. Anyone can do that. But can you prove it? According to Nick Corcodilos, author of the best-selling “Ask The Headhunter” (www.asktheheadhunter.com), “To get a hiring manager’s attention, you should become an expert in his business, understand the work he needs done, and find out how he would want you to do it. Then walk in and prove to him that you’re going to make his business more successful.” Here are some examples to help you do that … Say you’re looking for a sales job. You can research your target company and create a marketing plan, bring qualified leads to the interview, research the competition to uncover selling opportunities — or all of the above. How about a job as a trainer or teacher? Research and prepare a sample curriculum, then deliver a mini-lesson in the interview. (I know for a fact that this works — I did it back in 1989 and got hired over 200+ other candidates.) Want to be a writer or editor? Bring writing samples to the interview — and write up a special report about your target employer based on what your research tells you. To get hired faster, start working before you get hired. Is this starting to make sense yet? Want a job in IT, or any other field? Research your target company’s products and customers from their Web site, then write a list of possible improvements based on what you find and what you’ve done for other companies (or what you learned in school). Here’s an even better way to research an employer. Network your way into the company and ask employees what they’re biggest frustrations are. You will get an earful of answers. Now, do you think you MIGHT get a hiring manager’s attention if you were to call and say, “I’ve just interviewed 5 people in your IT department and boiled their comments down to three major problems facing your company. I’ve solved each of these problems before. Could I buy you a cup of coffee and show you my findings tomorrow at 3:00?” OK, you say. That’s fine if I have contacts at the company I want to work for. But I don’t know anyone at Company X, so that technique won’t work for me, right? Wrong. Web sites like www.LinkedIn.com let you make contact with people at almost any company, in almost any industry. And LinkedIn.com is free. So you’re out of excuses for lackadaisical networking. With the right mix of research, preparation and gumption, you will literally have no competition for the job you want. Corcodilos sums it up this way: “When you meet an employer, don’t wait for anyone to prod you. Do the job — right there in the interview.” Does this job-search method seem like a lot of work? Well, so is that job you want to get hired for. “Why should convincing a manager to hire you be any less challenging than the job itself? It’s up to you to prove your value to every employer you meet. Employers won’t figure it out for themselves,” says Corcodilos. Amen to that. Now, go out and make your own luck! Grandma’s Favorite Homemade Facials

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

By Lee Dobbins Women have been caring for their skin long before facials became common place and back in Grandmas time only the very wealthy had the money for fancy skin treatments. So what did Grandma use for great facials? She turned to her kitchen cupboards of course! Using homemade recipes and natural ingredients can work wonders on your skin and are non toxic and dont harm the environment either. Not to mention the break theyll give your wallet. Heres some great home remedies you can use to have youthful, glowing skin: Eggs - Honey - Sour Cream. It may sound like the makings of a good coffee cake, but If you have dry skin this facial can work wonders for you. Mix one egg yolk, two tablespoons sour cream and one teaspoon of honey. Dip a cotton ball into the mixture and apply to your skin. Leave on for fifteen minutes then rinse off with warm water. Milk Of Magnesia. Grandma always said she bought so much Milk Of Magnesia because she had an ulcer, but now I know it was really her secret facial remedy! Believe it or not, this is a very effective cleanser and makes a great facial mask. Pour some Milk of Magnesia into a bowl and use cotton balls to dab on your face. Avoid the area around your eyes. Leave on for 10 minutes. Wet a face cloth with warm water and scrub the face to remove. Use a good natural moisturizer after to really leave your skin with a healthy glow. Oatmeal - Honey - Lemon Juice. These three things mixed together make a great facial mask for anyone who has oily skin. Just mix them up and slather on your face. Leave on for 10 minutes and rinse off with warm water. Almonds - Witch Hazel. No, Im not nuts - ground almonds and witch hazel make a great facial paste for normal skin. Chop the almonds up until they are very fine and mix cup with enough witch hazel to make a paste. Apply to your face and leave on for fifteen minutes. Gently wipe the paste off with a cloth and then rinse your face with warm water. Taking care of your skin is important to look and feel your best. While there are a lot of manufactured products out there, for the most part, these natural facials work just as good without using toxic ingredients and harsh chemicals so next time you feel like a great facial, you only need to go as far as your kitchen cupboard! Getting A Leg Up

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Justin Driscoll Legging Up Your Competition Lets face it. When you graduate from college you need an edge over the competition, right? Every year thousands of college students just like you enter the job market looking for the same thing you are, a job / career. Since that is the case you need something other than a paper degree to get your first job. Here are a few suggestions you can do while you are still in school: Project-based experience Many schools give their students an opportunity to work with a local organization related to your field on a project the company needs help on. For many of these companies they are viewing this student help in the same manner they would if a consultant were to come in and help them with this project. There are some regional organizations around the country like the Pittsburgh Technology Council who organize formal programs for students and companies to participate in a project based experience. Some of the companies who participated in the Pittsburgh Technology Councils program gave students a real world project whereas other created a fictitious one. A few of the companies who gave students an existing problem to solve actually used the students results and saved the company money. Talk to your professors, career services directors, co-op coordinators, or anyone on your campus that could possibly set an opportunity up for you or for a group of students at a local company. If you would be willing to work with a company for six or eight weeks, unpaid, on a project like this it could give you a huge leg up on your competition. The contacts you can make and the experience you can put on your resume is more valuable than money. Job Shadowing Another great way to get a leg up on your competition is to consider shadowing someone who already works in your field of study. If you are a biology major it might be worth your time to contact someone at a hospital or life sciences company who has a biology degree and learn how they are using their degree, or how did they landed their first job, etc… Many job shadowing experiences are very informal and short term; one day, or at the most one week. It would be in your best interest to talk with a professor or career services department to try and make this initial contact. If you work with the college the company may view it more as an educational experience rather than an attempt to get a job at this company. Again the networking and the experience is more valuable than money. There are many other ways to get a leg up on the job seekers competition but we dont have time for them all in this article. Here are a couple more suggestions: Informational interviewing Internships (spring, summer or fall) Cooperative education (usually a two year internship with the same company) As we stated at the beginning of this article anything you can do to get a leg up on your fellow job seeking competitors, do it. As you probably guessed after reading this article one of the best ways to get a leg up is to do as much networking as possible while you are in college, and get as much real world experiences as possible. This principle will hold true for every job you acquire so you may as well start early. Are You Sad? Four Tools To Release The Winter Blues

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By Brian Walsh What an appropriate acronym. It stands for Seasonal Affective Disorder. I used to live in the arctic. In winter, we didn’t see the sun for many months. I am acutely aware of the winter blues and how people are affected emotionally, physically, and intellectually. Much has been written on the subject, so I would like to provide you with some supplemental information. Natural Light Research has demonstrated that exposure to natural light has a positive effect on human health, emotional well-being, and therefore learning. Some of the common symptoms of lack of natural light are fatigue, disturbed sleep patterns, appetite and weight disorders, depression, skin damage, and suppressed immune functions. During the short days of winter, a common problem is Seasonal Affective Disorder. The symptoms can be easily remedied through daily exposure to sunlight. Alternatively, Bright Light Therapy (phototherapy), using a minimum of ten thousand lux units for thirty minutes in the early morning, will often cure SAD. Just to put this into perspective, even the cloudiest day is rarely below ten thousand lux, and a sunny afternoon could be as much as one-hundred thousand lux. Do your own research to understand the current technology for Bright Light Therapy devices. The commonly-used fluorescent tubes, found in many offices and training facilities, have only narrow spectrum light, and they also emit a constant pulsing that can create stress and fatigue. A study of 750 classrooms ((21,000 students) in California, Washington, and Colorado found that students in classrooms with windows and skylights learned 20 to 26 percent faster than students in classrooms with the least natural light exposure. A Florida study of two first grade classrooms found that full-spectrum lighting reduced nervousness and hyperactivity. The students also improved their overall classroom performance. The Law Of Emotion A person can only have one set of emotions and feelings at a time. Stronger emotions and feelings replace weaker ones. Indifference or boredom can be substituted with appreciation or curiosity. Curiosity can then be replaced with excitement, which in turn can enable a high-energy learning state. Self-criticism can be substituted with a strong self-esteem. Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is a way of modeling how successful people achieve their results. It gives us a wonderful set of tools and principles for enhancing the components of emotional intelligence: self-awareness, self-control, motivation, empathy, and social skills. The Love Factor Two parallel studies were conducted on young newborn rats sourced from the same supplier. All aspects of the experiments were identical, including their food. In one of the locations, Cambridge University in England, the rats were gaining weight and thriving. In the other location, Harvard University in the USA, the rats were experiencing less measurable growth. The researchers were unable to rationalize the difference until they later discovered the one factor that made the difference. In order to clean the cages at Harvard, the maintenance staff moved the rats into other cages. At Cambridge, while some maintenance workers cleaned the cages, other workers held and stroked the rats. If TLC (tender loving care) can have that kind of effect on the physiology of rats, think what it can do for a human mind. Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) EFT is one of the many techniques in the new field of Energy Psychology. It is in the branch known as meridian therapies. The technique removes negative emotions, reduces or eliminates pain, releases phobias, and assists in setting and implementing positive goals. EFT is a form of psychological acupressure, based on the same energy meridians used in traditional acupuncture, to treat emotional disorders. Focusing on the issue and stimulating the major neural pathways initiates a memory process causing change by unblocking the emotional short-circuit. This process results in substituting positive emotions for the negative emotions, which were previously learned and associated with the issue. The process initially requires the person to think about the event or issue. Simple tapping with the fingertips is used to input kinetic energy onto specific meridians on the hand, head, and chest. This combination of tapping the energy meridians and voicing specific phrases works to clear the emotional block from the body’s bio-energetic system. This restores the mind and body’s balance, which is essential for optimal learning and mental health. EFT can dramatically enhance intellectual performance simply by eliminating the emotional lids on our intellectual potential. Most SAD Goes Unnoticed. Most of us navigate through the winter totally oblivious to how poorly we are functioning. Those who evade SAD are regular outdoor exercisers and walkers. Many of us just feel a bit down, and turn to comfort food. The lethargy sets in and we pine for the spring. Be assertive. Releasing the winter blues is simpler than you think. Begin today. Get outside. International speaker, Dr. Brian E. Walsh, is the bestselling author of Unleashing Your Brilliance. Relationships: Love Vs. Infatuation

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Nick Arrizza, M.D. I’m sure you’ve heard the debate that attempts to separate out that which is love and that which is infatuation when it comes to relationships. If you haven’t it goes something like this: You shouldn’t rely on or trust feelings of infatuation when it comes to getting into a relationship because they are often short lived and based on misperceptions of who the other person really is. Rather you should search in your heart for the presence of genuine feelings of love as a guide to any relationship decisions you make. One problem that enters into this argument that I must emphasize however is the common belief that feelings of infatuation also arise from within the heart. If they did, you see, you would never be able to distinguish them from feelings of love because they would essentially be “on top of each other” and there would be no clarity to your emotional state. So let me make it clear then. Feelings of infatuation are associated with an experience of: mental and emotional excitement, feelings of impatience, anxiety or nervousness, feelings of neediness, lack of clarity in one’s perception of others and themselves, a tendency to make impulsive and irrational choices, and a sense of urgency. Where does all of this stem from? Well it’s based on unfulfilled emotional needs that are the result of a deprived childhood, stored in the ego or brain and/or sexual needs that are erupting at a physiological level in the body; both distracting one’s attention away from noticing whether loving feelings actually exist in the heart. When one relies on the experience of infatuation, ignores the heart’s message, and is later disappointed, the mistake that is then made is that the heart is blamed for the problem. What’s interesting is the heart was hardly even consulted and yet receives blame for something that took place at the ego/brain and/or body level. This further alienates one from one’s inner heart, which by the way is the source of all one’s inner wisdom and knowing. So what happens the next time? Well now since the heart and its message have become perceived as mistrustful it becomes shut down and so the individual feels even more uncertain of how to proceed. They have lost, so to speak, their internal compass, and therefore become increasingly vulnerable to being seduced or led astray by ego or bodily distractions. I think that you can see how the rest of the scenario plays out from here. You see that is why most individuals find themselves experiencing relationship problems and why couples counseling is such big business.
