Simple, and Stylish Wedding Reception Centerpiece: Craft Project

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Lisa Robbin This simple, yet elegant table centerpiece is a great way to make a fancy “to do” at each table, without breaking the bank. This is so easy, even a child can do it! I had my 8 year old son help me. For my own wedding, we picked up stemware at our local thrift stores. The idea wasn’t to have every table look exactly the same, but rather for each table to be a variation on a theme. If you’re looking for a more unified appearance, please make sure your count is accurate and buy everything you need at once, to ensure colors and shapes match. For each centerpiece, you will need: 1 wine goblet, or other stemware 2 pieces of tulle 9-12″ in width (either square or circle) 2 contrasting curling ribbons approximately 10-14″ long 1-3 tea light candles (the 7-hour floating type)or other floating candles, depending on the width of the glass water 1. Stack the tulle pieces. If you are using square pieces, turn one of the pieces so that you have an 8-point star shape. It will add more visual appeal to the finished project. You might consider using 2 diferent colored pieces of tulle to add a more dramatic appearance. 2. Center the glass on the tulle. We’re about to tie the tulle around the base of the glass, but before we do, we need to get our ribbons ready. 3. Take the 2 lengths of ribbon and pull them together. Make sure they are not twisted. You want one color on the “inside” and the other on the “outside” so that when we tie them around the stem of the glass, we have a beautiful contrasting mix of color. 4. Pull up the tulle and secure it in place with the ribbon. Tie a knot to secure the ribbon to the stem. Now make a bow and pull the ribbons apart so that your bow has more volume. Curl the ends of your curling ribbon and arrange the curls around the base of the glass. 5. Fill your goblet with water. You might consider coloring your water with a bit of food coloring to match your wedding colors. 6. Float the candle(s) on top of the water. Light the candles as the reception begins. Look for long-burning floating candles. You don’t want your candles burning out just as dinner ends. A single candle floating on water will gravitate to the edge of the glass. Try to find glasses big enough to float 2-4 candles safely. Too much heat may damage fragile stemware, so use caution. For a more elegant look, arrange goblets of different heights on the same table or change the level of the water in each glass to create the illusion of height. You can also decorate your tulle with beads, or find tulle that is already adorned with sequins or beads. Use your imagination and create something perfect for your special occasion. Place the goblet on a mirrored coaster to create a beautiful reflection of light. Good luck, and best wishes on your special day. 3 Great Spots for Dating

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Roman Zazulak If you are looking to make a great impression and also make it easier for you and your date to have a good time, choosing the right location for your date is important. There are many places that are ideal for a date, here are three of them. Coffee Shop The coffee shop is growing in popularity as a great spot for a date. Coffee shops are ideal places for people to meet with one another, have long conversations and do something besides eat a big meal. At a coffee shop, you dont have to get overly dressed up, pay for an expensive dinner or drink alcoholic beverages. The coffee shops main strength is that you can meet the person and have a great conversation. Believe it or not, most dating spots are horrible for conversing (e.g. loud, smoky clubs, concerts and movie theaters). Meet Outdoors One of the best ways to enjoy a date is to be outdoors. You dont have to be cooped up inside, especially when the weather is nice. Choose a park, boardwalk, outdoor fair or festival or if you live in the city take a walk around town together. There is so much to do and see in an outdoor environment and being outdoors will definitely supply you with a few things to talk about. For some people, it can be tough to get the conversation going, at least when you are outdoors, you can find something interesting or something that inspires you. Laugh the Night Away While it might not be your choice for a first date, going to a comedy club with your date can be a great idea. Who doesnt like to laugh? Usually comedy clubs are a great way to enjoy a casual evening and have a good time. If you are laughing, it usually means that you are having a good time and comedy clubs make it extremely easy to laugh the night away. In his quest for finding the perfect wife, Roman tried every method imaginable until he finally got married to Gigi in 2004. Finding Affordable Transcription for Research Interviews

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Anne Hickley If youve conducted some research including one-to-one interviews, and then realised how much work is involved in transcribing them, youll probably be looking for an affordable transcription service. There are many transcription services available but sometimes an affordable transcription service can seem hard to find. Transcription is not cheap, because it is a lot more involved than copy typing, but that doesnt mean you cant find affordable transcription, and whats more, by providing good quality recordings you can make the transcription more affordable, as it will take less time to complete. You could do the transcription yourself, but if you are not a fast touch-typist and do not have specialist transcription equipment then it will take you a very long time. I have had clients come to me saying they started the work themselves and it was taking them 20 hours to produce a transcript of a 1-hour recording. Thats why they ended up using a transcription service! The most important thing to remember is that its just not possible to type as fast as you speak. Even an experienced transcriptionist will be able to average four times as long for a good, clear one-to-one interview so an hour of recording will take an average of four hours to transcribe. ( Industry standards obtained from the Industry Production Standards Guide (I998), published by OBC, Columbus, OH, USA) Transcriptionists also have to make sense of whats being said, punctuate the speech correctly and use the right homophones (words like there/their/theyre that sound the same but are spelt differently.) So how can you make sure that your transcript is clear, in order to get an affordable transcription price? Basically, the easier you make the transcription for the transcriptionist, the more likely they are to be able to give you an affordable transcription quote. First of all, use the best transcription equipment you can afford, and make sure its fit for purpose. This means that for interviews you should have a recorded with an external microphone rather than one built into the recorder, which is only designed to pick up one voice dictating. For focus groups you should have several microphones so that all participants are close to a mike, and for conferences the speakers should have good microphones and there should also be people in the audience with roving microphones to take around to any audience members wanting to ask a question. More and more transcriptionists are only taking on digital work now, rather than tapes, so to give yourself the broadest base to chose from you might want to consider using a digital recording method. These are also usually better quality. Next, you should prepare well before each interview. Make sure that, if at all possible you have arranged a quiet meeting room, as background noise will dramatically increase the time taken to transcribe the recording, as the transcriptionist may have to listen to sections several times in order to capture the interview speech. It is helpful to spell out your interviewees name at the beginning of the tape, before starting the interview, and speak out any information you would like on the transcript header e.g. the date, the job title of your interviewee etc. During the interview, unless you need to interrupt in order to take back control of the interview, try not to speak over your interviewee. Often in a normal conversation we say yeah, yeah, yeah or right or OK more to indicate were listening than for any other reason. Every time you say that you are likely to be obscuring a much more important word or group of words spoken by your interviewee. After the interview, it is enormously helpful if you can include a list of key words for the transcriptionist. Although were happy to go on a Google hunt, searching the internet to find out how to spell technical terms, names of drugs, names of organisations etc., if you can provide this info in advance it certainly saves time, and saving time saves you money, again reaching toward that goal of an affordable transcription price. Technical work will always be more expensive than non-technical, but providing a crib sheet of key words should reduce the cost. Most transcriptionists work in a standard format, whether that be tabular, tabbed, interviews shown as initials or full names etc. Again most are happy to work to your specifications, but the standard format might well be cheaper, so think carefully about whether you need something different or not. Find out what the standard format is in advance if it concerns you, and you may be able to adapt it to your needs. If, for instance, its essential that you have speakers in different fonts or different colours, this will add to the price. It might be more cost-effective for you to put this in when the basic transcript is returned to you! Finally, give some serious thought to whether or not you need a verbatim transcription. Verbatim transcription includes every repeated word, every um and erm, all those filler phrases like you know and know what I mean that may be repeated a hundred times in one interview, and can also include pauses, coughs, throat clearing etc. if required. Needless to say if this takes longer. If the transcriptionist can filter out all this stuff the transcript is quicker. In my company the cheapest level is what we call intelligent verbatim which cuts out all these fillers but leaves the rest exactly as its spoken. Different transcriptionists work this differently though, so always check when youre phoning for your quote. Here are some brief examples. Somewhat more expensive is edited, which corrects the grammar and any mispronounced words as well as knocking out all the fillers. Verbatim: Erm well, I dunno really, know what I mean? I mean, you know, when I asked them what Marys, er, um, condish, condit, condition was, they said like erm Im afraid we cant, erm, tell you that, Mrs. Smith, cause you aint a relative. Intelligent Verbatim: Well, I dunno really. I mean when I asked them what Marys condition was they said Im afraid we cant tell you that, Mrs Smith, cause you aint a relative. Edited: Well I dont know really. I mean when I asked them what Marys condition was they said Im afraid we cant tell you that, Mrs Smith, because you are not a relative. You can see that a whole extra line of typing is required for the verbatim work in just those few short sentences. There are occasions when verbatim is required depending on your topic it might be required for legal reasons, or you might be studying the language. But if you really dont need it, dont end up paying for it! There are many excellent reasons for interviewing groups of people, but dont do this in order to try to reduce the transcription cost! It takes much longer to transcribe a group of more than two or three people (including the moderator/interviewer) because of the time taken to distinguish the different voices and the fact that people will inevitably talk over each other, especially when they get excited, enthusiastic, impassioned or angry. And finally, a note of caution: remember that the cheapest transcription quote might not be the most affordable one in the end. There is an oft-quoted phrase: if you pay peanuts you get monkeys. Will it really be cost-effective to send your hard-won interviews to the cheapest service if what comes back is gobbledygook and you have to go through the whole thing correcting every other word? How much time will you then waste that could have been spent more productively on your analysis? Anne Hickley has many years experience in a wide variety of administrative posts. Green Tea Diet Aid

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Danny Brown The Chinese have been using green tea diet aid for thousands of years as a medicinal drink. They have been so sure of benefits found in green tea diet aid; they have used it to treat everything from depression to headaches. The Chinese believe traditional herbal remedies are much better for your health. Researchers have been studying green tea to discover what substance in the green tea makes it such a strong health drink and diet aid. They found green tea has a high number of antioxidants that contribute to your health. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition wrote on the benefits of green tea. American and Swiss scientists conducted the research at the University of Geneva. Their findings decided green tea diet aid has compounds that promote thermogenesis in the body. Dr. Abdul Dulloo stated diet aid is achieved by reducing energy intake or increasing energy outtake. Green tea has substances that can increase metabolic rates in the body and curb appetite. This makes green tea diet aid perfect for helping with weight loss. This is great news for many people looking for a diet supplement that is safe and easy to take. Dr. Dullo and his staff selected ten healthy men for their experiments. They believed caffeine was the main source in green tea diet responsible for weight loss. They had the men in the study group follow a Western diet. The diet consisted of forty percent fat, thirteen percent protein and forty-seven percent carbohydrates. Each day the staff measured the calories burned in a 24-hour period three times. They also checked the groups use of their carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. In addition their respiration was checked. The results showed men given the green tea diet aid showed a four-percent increase in their 24-hour energy. The men taking the green tea diet aid also had lower respiration quotient. This caused more fats to be burned. The group not given green tea diet aid showed only slight increases in metabolic rates and no decline in respiration quotient. The researcher found the substance catechin polyphenol, found in green tea is a strong diet aid. The substances in green tea change the way the body uses norepinephrine. Norepinephrine is a hormone that increases metabolism. In summary Dr Dullo and his staff found that green teas diet benefits are from its high antioxidant content and the presence of catechin polyphenol. This combination helps the body to speed up fat and calorie burning. Its this combination that helps with weight loss. Encourage Your Spouse and Build a Relationship That Lasts

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Jean MacKenzie It seems that in our society it has come to be expected that women willget together and criticize their husbands and boyfriends and men willget together and put down their wives and girlfriends. Everyone has tohave a few sarcastic comments to fling at their partner, especiallywhen there is an audience around to laugh at their expense. We tend totear down the very person we claim to love. I think it has become socommon in our society that sometimes people dont even realize they aredoing it. It is so easy to find the fault in others. I know I have been guiltyof this very crime many times in my past and although I try hard toguard against it now I still find myself being overly critical attimes. It takes a lot of effort to keep from falling into the trap offaultfinding. Sometimes it can help to look at things from the otherpersons perspective. We all have our faults, but it hurts when the person you love is alwayspointing them out. Im sure you can think of a time when you were hurtby someones negative comments. If you want to build up a lovingrelationship you have to try to avoid hurting your spouse by makingsuch comments. Sometime it is necessary to point out where some improvement or changesare necessary, just make sure your motive is always to build up yourrelationship rather than to tear down your spouse and use language thatconveys this desire. Most often however, pointing out our spousesflaws does not help them to overcome them. If we want to foster aloving relationship we should make a conscious effort to encourage ourspouse. Make it a challenge to yourself to see how encouraging you canbe. At any given time there is always something negative you could say, butthere is always something positive you could say as well. Make aneffort to emphasize the positive. Think of all your partners talentsand make an effort to compliment his or her abilities. Take note ofthe things your spouse does that you appreciate and be sure to thankhim or her for these things. Make a habit of saying somethingencouraging to your spouse every day. Never mind whether or not your spouse has been encouraging to you. Take the initiative and start improving you relationship today. Noticewhen your spouse does the little things. Call her up at work to tellher how much you appreciate her. Mention how talented he is and dontbe afraid to point out his talents to other people. Ask your partnerhow her day was and make an effort to listen to her response. Dosomething with your spouse that you know he really enjoys. Say I loveyou in as many ways possible. Gives hugs and kisses and back rubs. Be romantic. Make time for each other. Write love notes. Challengeyourself to be creative and the fruits of your positive attitude maysurprise you. Build up your spouse and you will be building up yourrelationship. Jean sees clients in her office in Fredericton, NB and offers telephone and online counselling. Phoenix Cosmetic Surgery - Lower Body Lift Plastic Surgeon Procedure

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

By Todd Going Skin droops as it ages because the body stops producing proteins called elastin and collagen. This is an unfortunate side effect of aging. Once the chemicals start to disappear, the gravity starts pulling the skin down. Fortunately a lower body lift can be a solution to this problem. This surgical procedure will tighten the thighs, hips, butt and create a smoother, younger look. Because lower body lifts require multiple procedures, they generally require a longer stay in the hospital. Occasionally the procedures can take place in an out patient surgical clinic, but it is usually up to the doctor to decide. After the lower body lift surgeries are complete its a good idea to walk around and try to be as mobile as possible. Good blood circulation will help the healing process. About a week after the surgery is performed you will still feel a little bit sore and most likely have an altered routine. In about two weeks you should be able to resume as normal however its always a good idea to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise. To be safe, it’s always a good idea to follow the directions your doctor has given you. The Dinner Party Season

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

By Robin De Groot With the advent of fall and winter, many of us are thinking about the return of the Dinner Party season after a summer of entertaining al fresco. Whether your style is traditional, themed or contemporary; your guests young or old; a dramatic table setting, a well planned menu and a quick freshening of your home will ensure that your dinner party will be a hit. Just like the backdrop of a well-staged play; the components of a well-set table, detailed menu and an edited Dining room will create the mood for a memorable soiree. Carefully considered details will reinforce your desired feeling or theme, especially when everything is in its proper place, allowing everyone to be drawn into your fte. First, consider your audience (children need extra attention), is your Party for schmoozing, celebrating, showing off, family, friends, a mixer, who are you serving? Choose your props for the evening and dont be afraid of going for the dramatic. Go to your local florist and opt for the unexpected! Try using 2 large floor vases with black 6 curly willow intermixed with bunches of forced Forsythia. Or better still, perhaps a row of 3 or 5 square vases (4×4x4) with polished river rock in the bottom and one large stunning Agapanthus set on an angle coming out from each vase with their head resting just past the vase lip; can you think of a more modern and simply stunning presentation for a sexy, sophisticated Dinner Party? Whatever you select for your centerpiece make sure it is unusual, makes a bold statement and expresses your personality. Dont forget to try napkin folds that are in keeping with your style and of course edit out your Dining room of unwanted clutter to make the traffic flow more harmonious. Dont forget to freshen up your Entrance hall/area with some flowers and hurricanes filled with candles, first impressions are often the most prominent. Then decide upon your theme if you have one or need one, and then plan out every detail of your menu. Remember when planning a dinner party at your home, limit the number of your guests to six to ten people. This will maintain the scale to a manageable level as well as insure that you will be able to interact with each guest on a personal level while also keeping your sanity. Some of my other recommendations include: Examine your dining room table. How many guests can it take comfortably? Don’t forget that each guest should have 24″ for each place setting. Until youre comfortable with throwing a dinner party, keep your menu simple. If I’m not going to have help serving or catering, I try to plan dishes for which the majority of work can be done in advance. When determining your menu, try to select dishes that complement one another. Avoid the “globetrotting” trend, in which every course is another country and palette. I recommend first selecting your main dish, and then plan the side dishes around that main course. If you’re serving dinner as a buffet, make sure to make 2 extra portions so that no one is stigmatized by taking the “Last Portion”. Remember the power of colour. Never use the same colour for each course. Spice them up with some colourful garnishes, sauces or accessories. If your doing an Asian theme, try using Hot Red lacquer chop sticks. Let your meal take its course. Its easy to fall into a rushed orderly progression. Enjoy your friends, your hard work and your delightful meal. Take time to savor and sip. Let your creative energy flow with your decorating. Never underestimate the power of fresh flowers, candles and personalized name cards to show your guests how special they are to you. While you can’t have enough candles lit, avoid scented candles in the Dining room as they will compete with the flavours and scent of your meal. Most of all though, enjoy the pleasure of your friends company, your achievement and the luxury of a well planned Dinner Party. A truly successful Dinner Party is an evening full of laughter, delicious foods and sparkling conversation in which you are all the stars. Great Design in essence is about the creation of an exquisite stage for the beauty and quality of life we all desire. What is the Reward of the Saints?

Friday, August 17th, 2007

By Alan D Campbell What is the reward of the saints? Jesus Christ will rule as King of Kings in the Kingdom of God. Who then are the other kings? The Apostle John writes in Revelation 1:5-6 that the saints will not only be kings, but they will also be priests: “5And from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, and the first begotten of the dead, and the prince of the kings of the earth. Unto him that loved us, and washed us from our sins in his own blood, “6And hath made us kings and priests unto God and his Father; to him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.” (KJV) The “us” to whom John refers are the saints of God. Converted Christians are to have positions of rulership as kings under Christ in the Kingdom of God. John also reiterates this truth in Revelation 5:9-10: “9And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; “10And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth.” (KJV) Yes, the reward of the saints is to serve as kings and priests in the Kingdom of God on the earth. The prophet Daniel also records In Daniel 7:18 that the saints will rule in the Kingdom of God: “18But the saints of the most High shall take the kingdom, and possess the kingdom for ever, even for ever and ever.” (KJV) Again, in Daniel 7:22, Daniel writes that the saints will judge the people in the Kingdom of God: “22Until the Ancient of days came, and judgment was given to the saints of the most High; and the time came that the saints possessed the kingdom.” (KJV) In Luke 19:11-28, Jesus Christ gave a parable about the Kingdom of God to show that it was not to appear immediately. He alluded to himself as a nobleman who would go into a far country, which is heaven, and receive a kingdom. He gave his servants pounds, which are symbolic of the spiritual gifts that he gave to his servants. In verse 17 of Luke 19, Jesus said to a person whose pound had gained 10 pounds that he was to have authority over 10 cities. “17And he said unto him, Well, thou good servant: because thou hast been faithful in a very little, have thou authority over ten cities.” (KJV) Yes, the saints who overcome and grow spiritually are to receive as their reward rulership over cities in the Kingdom of God. John quotes Jesus Christ in Revelation 2:26-27 that the saints who overcome and keep the works of Christ will receive as their reward power over the nations: “26And he that overcometh, and keepeth my works unto the end, to him will I give power over the nations: “27And he shall rule them with a rod of iron; as the vessels of a potter shall they be broken to shivers: even as I received of my Father.” (KJV) Yes, the other kings in the Kingdom of God are the saints of God who have overcome their own sinful ways with the help of God’s Holy Spirit. The saints who grow spiritually will be rewarded with positions as kings and priests in the Kingdom of God. Ruling over others with love is an important responsibility that God will give to his people who have overcome and followed the ways of God. The saints will have jobs for which they are well suited and which will be of benefit to their subjects in the Kingdom of God. That is indeed good news. Alan D. Campbell lives in Brandon, Florida.
